Will Historians Rank George W. Bush as the Worst Two Term President?

Will "Dubya" Go Down as the Worst of All Presidents?

Roger Gowens
For those of you unfamiliar with the concept of irony: the following is satire. In my opinion, George W. Bush WILL go down as one of the worst 5 Presidents in the history of the United States, if not the absolute, rock-bottom worst ever, period. The following may not be based on actual events, but the names have not been changed to protect the incompetent.

For all his protests about not caring about his role in history, George W. Bush just might awake Karl Rove, asleep in his coffin, to lead the effort to rank Bush above the "one termers" in the discussions of the worst Presidents.

While the trail had grown cold in some cases,"Bush's brain" could uncover some interesting facts about many of Bush's predecessors.

Did historians know that John Adams was involved in something called the "XYZ affair" and passed up a chance to annihilate France?

John Quincy Adams, son of the former President, didn't even win the popular vote, beating a guy from Tennessee with help from another branch of government.

Martin Van Buren presided over a depression and was a "lily-fingered aristocrat". Did they have wind-surfing back then? There was even a gang called the Van Buren Boys, according to Seinfeld.

William Henry Harrison conned voters into believing him to be a "homespun rustic". The guy even had the nerve to suggest he was a "good guy to have a beer with" and enjoyed clearing brush on his ranch and choking on pretzels.

John Tyler promoted the annexation of Texas.

James K. Polk provoked an unnecessary war over an area with great natural resources.

Zachary Taylor's main objective was "harmonizing conflicting interests" and promoting the union pre-Civil War. You know, a uniter, not a divider . We know how that turned out.

Millard Fillmore is known only for an Auditorium in San Francisco where they fomented revolution and played psychedelic music. They probably promoted same sex marriage there, as well.

Franklin Pierce was considered an "imbecile" and didn't have the cajones to take over Cuba.

Lincoln only had some scout gig in wartime. His superiors probably didn't know where he was for months.

Andrew Johnson was impeached, for gosh sakes.

Chester Arthur did away with the spoils system, a socialistic notion, failed to spend his political capital and was accused of betraying his party.

James A. Garfield got shot and it wasn't even by the VP on a hunting trip.

Grover Cleveland fathered a child out of wedlock. That info might have come in handy in South Carolina. The child might have even had a dark complexion, also.

To the Karl Roves of the world, the choice is clear, historians. GWB ranks above all those hacks. Just wait until he opens his library. You'll love both books, although one hasn't been colored in yet.

Yes, and all the other presidents mentioned are not especially well liked either. So Bush is right at home. The difference being that some of these presidents may have had enough redeeming value to avoid being the lowest of the low. And that's where W. leads the list. Since he had no redeeming values whatsoever to his presidency. Nada, Zilch.
So yes, he's a likable guy, but what does that have to with being a competent president?
So you can make comparisons and hope to gain a margin of credibility, but you also risk straining credibility too.
So I say face it, because the man never cared about anyone or anything not connected to his world. And to be president I say yes, he or she must have some measure of true compassion for other people. And have some interest in world affairs. As well as the ability to see issues from different points of view. Since there are many shades of gray, but not so any in black or white.
So I hope people see that because someone is lika

H.Truman is credited with saving a million American lives & 4-5

million Japanese by ending the war early with the threat of additional nuclear strikes. (And, GET OVER IT! More people were killed by the fire-bombing campaigns

in Tokyo, and in Stuttgart, Berlin & Dusseldorf Germany....
...History will vindicate him as it did Lincoln, T.Roosevelt, Truman, and J.Q.Adams . ALL were reviled upon leaving the White House... Lincoln had more than

1/2 of the country hating his policies that they actually went to war over it!
A recent poll shows a growing number of voters are becoming nostalgic for President Bush, mostly based upon the facts that he made them feel safe & that he was decisive; he took action when he said he would. (Actually President Bush had a higher approval rating at 13 months than obama currently has.

    .....give it time.....

In all honesty, with the events that President Bush had to face and with the restrictions he had to deal with (especially 9/11, USS Cole & Kenya,) the decisions made [despite the MSM], were historic!
    AND...
...History will vindicate him as it did Lincoln, T.Roosevelt, Truman, and J.Q.Adams . ALL were reviled upon leaving the White House...
hell, Hitler didn't have WMDs! BUT, he was working on them! Would it have been prudent to have killed Adolf in '39 or '40? How many lives would've been saved?!?
    even
Ronald Reagan was slandered by the MSM, even though his presidency not only brought down the USSR - but ALSO had the most job-growth, the lowest unemployment, the highest stock market growth AND the most prosperity the US has ever had... though NBC did everything they could to make fun of, to slander, to accuse him of being senile and as a War-hawk... And yet TR is on Mt.Rushmore, H.Truman is credited with saving a million American lives & 4-5 million Japanese by ending the war ea

Hoover seems to be acknowledged as the worst.

Victor, the "anti-Bush bandwagon" has been full for some time. Some of the crises you cite were mostly of his own making in my opinion.

  • Victor Mobley2/26/2009

I know it's fun to jump on the anti-Bush bandwagon, but history really doesn't support him being the worst. First of all, the true effects of his policies (not just the spurious ones) won't be known for a few years yet, and there's so much we don't know. Obviously, since Obama hasn't reversed much of Bush's policies, there may be more to them that meets the eye.

I won't say he's one of the good or great ones, but I won't say he's the worst. I'd rank him right around in the middle. Keep in mind, most of our horrible presidents didn't have any crises to deal with. I handicap Bush in the rankings a bit for what he had to deal with (a collapsing market, two wars, a terrorist attack, trying to keep Americans vigilant, etc.) So for now he's smack in the middle for me.
