Will the Military Draft Return?

Is it Possible that the Military Draft Be Reinstated in the US? Let's Hope Not

JW
Could there be a possibility of the military draft being put back into effect in the US? If it is up to Rep. Charles Rangel of New York then the answer would be yes. Rangel is a Democrat who will probably head the powerful House Ways and Means Committee and says he is going to propose a new military draft. He believes that reinstating the military draft would help strengthen the US military and keep us prepared for any future military actions in Iraq, Iran and North Korea. Rangel later told reporters "There's no question in my mind that this president and this administration would never have invaded Iraq, especially on the flimsy evidence that was presented to the Congress, if indeed we had a draft, and members of Congress and the administration thought that their kids from their communities would be placed in harm's way."

The Selective Service System says that they are ready and able to respond to any crisis that would involve the need of a military draft. The also said that they could have everything ready in 193 days. This number is based off the more than 15 million names from the US that are eligible and registered for the Selective Service, which is required by law for all men between the ages of 18 and 26 to be registered.

However, it seems that Rep. Charles Rangel does not have a lot of support in trying to implement the military draft again, which has not been used since 1973 when the US went to an all volunteer military. Incoming Speaker Nancy Pelosi said the House Democratic Party will not support Rep. Rangel in his effort to re-establish the military draft. Also, this is not the first time Rangel has tried to push the draft. He proposed the draft just before the invasion of Iraq in 2003 and again earlier this year.

So it seems very unlikely that the military draft will be reinstated due to the main fact that "the volunteer service is working"! Also, if there was a major attack on the United States then more people would feel obligated to volunteer which would again make the military draft unnecessary. Two examples of situations where there was a major attack on the United States that resulted in a surge of additional volunteers for the military would be the Japanese attack at Pearl Harbor in 1941 and the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. Therefore, if the volunteer system is working then there is no need to reinstate the military draft and force people to go to war.

We might not all agree on politics, religion, etc., but that does not mean we are not patriotic towards the US! With that said I believe that the citizens in the US will, if needed, stand and fight to keep our freedom, but let us do it of our own accord!

  • As of right now there is not enough support to reinstate the military draft.
  • Rep. Charles Rangel does not have the support of his fellow Democrats on this issue.
  • As long as the Volunteer military is working there is NO need for the draft!

don't even start to ask "if i left the military what would happen then"

you are in the military because you volunteered

and last i checked you get paid to "volunteer"

so don't think your special cuz you volunteered to get paid.

you chose to join and that's your decision

don't try to make everyone else feel like they owe you something.

I can agree and disagree with points of having the draft. I think that it's a dirty job but someone has to do it. It doesn't matter if you want to or not, if someone invaded us what would you do? "Defend your family". But I also feel that it can lead some people to be rebelious. But being a single parent and military female, I here negative comments about us being in the military. I tell you what, if all like me got out of the military then what happen then.

i understand congressman rangels attack tword the draft just to keep us from war. and in this country the draft is highly frowned upon. it is un american to force people to fight, and how the heck is the military going to come up with the money to house, feed, train, transport, and pay all these new recruites that would be comming in? it would run our economy into the grouhd
