Will Mirrors Edge Change First Person Gaming?

Matt Remley
Mirror's Edge, one of the newest games from Electronic Arts could possibly change how first person gaming is played out. For those of you that don't know, first person games are done by allowing the player to experience the game from the view point of the character in the game; as if you were actually peering through that characters eyes.

Now that Mirror's Edge is on the dawn of its release for Xbox 360, Playstation 3, and a PC game coming early next year, questions arraise if this game could forever change gaming. A majority of games that turn out to be popular these days turn out to be games where players can utilize first person or third person view points. Turns out, most of those games, usually comes from the shooting genre of gaming.

Changes

What could change? While many from the current generation might not believe this, but Mirror's Edge could effect first person gameplay. After all, a video game like this has never been made before. Mirror's Edge is all about jumping from building to building and delivering messages to people, all while running from the government in the game which has taken away almost all basic human rights.

All of the views in the game are simply beautiful, even if Mirror's Edge doesn't change first person gaming, it will remain one of the best looking games for any console in 2008.

Chase

For those of you that may not know, Chase is a new television series on the Sci-Fi channel. What does this new show have to do with Mirror's Edge? Maybe the producers of the show didn't mean for this to happen, but the show seems to take after many factors from Mirror's Edge. It puts contestants on the run, and if they get away they get paid, and the commerical claims that the show is like a video game come to life.

Opinion

So as you can see, Mirror's Edge has already had an effect on media. However, I believe that in the coming years more games will try to "think outside of the box" and test new ways of gaming. Perhaps those games would be as creative as Mirror's Edge, but they will also be ground breaking in their own way, or at least I hope.

As many gamers around the world get tired of the same old games over and over again, many developers will find new and exciting ways to attract gamers. One day video games will most likely be done in virtual worlds, Mirror's Edge just brings us one step closer to that reality.

That is so true. I watch my daughter play her games on her Nintendo DX and she is often bored with the same old thing. Now, she spends her time with Toontown.com. Before that it was something else. Great article though!
