Will the Presidential and Vice Presidential Debates Answer the Nation's Questions?

JoAnn Selke
Where do the people of the United States stand? This question will be answered in November. I just hope we are becoming better and not going backwards. I was extremely bothered by the Presidential Debate and McCain's blatant display of smugness. He acted as though the debate was a joke and that he had already won. As if he were the better man and should not have to waste time with the little man that is apparently beneath him. It made me sick to my stomach to watch. He really could not look Obama in the eye. I find it discerning that someone could show such a public display of racism in our extremely diverse nation. Now, tonight, we watched his "sidekick" call him a Maverick so many times that Biden was able to throw it back in her face. What is she supposed to prove? That McCain supports women? I don't think so. It is so apparent that he is not a believer of anyone but the white man. I don't know what scares me most; the fact that the American people may actually vote for him or that something would happen to him and Palin would be President. While it does seem that both sides agree that change is inevitable, it is frightening to imagine the final results.

As part of my children's US History class, I instructed them to watch both debates and state their opinions. Of course, they immediately noticed that McCain was "laughing" and would not look at or address Obama directly. They believe that Obama appeared to be the most intelligent one. As they put it, he made actual points and has a plan; whereas, McCain just said this is what we need but did not explain how we would get there. Of course, McCain's statement about spending 3 million to study the DNA of bears brought questions, as well as the meaning of "earmarking." In the end, Obama was the winner. Tonight, they watched Palin and Biden. After about 30 minutes, my oldest stated that Palin had not used any big words that she did not understand. Of course, the potential Vice President should have a larger vocabulary than a 14 year old. Well, so you would think. Most of the time my daughters just laughed at Palin's "Darn right" statements, waiting for a BIG word, but they did comment that Biden is really smart.

It is apparent that we need change and not more of the same and YES, I am an Obama supporter, but I know many Republicans that have shifted sides in the name of change. I am just glad that Bush and Palin were not partners. (He also has a limited vocabulary, according to my daughter).
