I hate the idea of purchasing a new car. The excitement of owning a new car with the new car smell, only 18 to 20 miles on the odometer is only offset by the hours of sitting and waiting for the ridiculous amount of paperwork to be completed.
I never trade in my previous vehicle because the dealership never offers you the exact value of the car. Often, I either give the car to one of my sons or a niece, nephew or some other member of the family. Once I even donated a Hyundai to one to a charity.
During this next purchase extravaganza, I have a few valuable bits of information regarding purchasing new vehicles that I am privileged to have acquired. I previously audited a few car dealerships and thankfully have some firsthand information regarding new vehicles. I also have taken steps to review the Blue Book value of vehicles, gone to dealer sites and taken virtual tours and know exactly what I want, need and should use to bargain with in getting the vehicle I want at the price I want.
I have narrowed my search down to three vehicles: The BMW 725i, Acura MDX and Chrysler 300. The prices are indeed a factor. Also the dynamics of each vehicle in addition to the drive and mileage must be considered. I require that my new vehicle have a navigational system and OnStar. I must have both because of personal experiences while driving in and getting lost in other states.
A few months ago, I was on a job. The job required that I travel out of state to Mississippi. Now, I'm not sure about others, but I still have nightmares about the movies 'Mississippi Burning' and "Ghost of Mississippi.' And since our first African American president has been in office, the color blindness this nation has long claimed is only that; a claim.
So, while in Mississippi, I became lost. My GPS took me way off course due to a detour on State Road 98. It took several hours punching in names and state roads, looking for directions and panicking while trying to find the route back to the main road. I then had to hunt down a state trooper before I could find my way back to the state road leading back to Florida.
I refuse to go anywhere from this point on without both in a car or the car I am driving. You might ask why I must have both. Well the reason is a GPS has to be updated regularly to add new roads, remove roads, add locations or whatever has been changed. Then, if a GPS is not updated when road work is involved and detours have been established, you can experience what I did and get lost. That's a scary situation. When and if that occurs, OnStar is your backup or is the backup I need. For my safety and comfort, I need both.
The vehicle also must be heavy enough to handle the force of large vehicles passing. I cannot handle feeling the wind blow and move my vehicles when large 18 wheelers fly by. Small cars are my fear. I feel a small vehicle just does not provide the cushion needed if a larger vehicle impacts. So the three vehicles indicated are heavy duty and have some cushion to them.
I am considered a confident and well-informed consumer. I am a confident and well-informed consumer. When I walk into a store, business or any retail shop, I immediately set to work. My position is, I am going to get out of them what they think they are going to get out of me. And if not, then I walk. And normally, I get what I want.
So, when I finally make my selection, and drive away from the dealership with my new vehicle, whichever it will be, I will have the satisfaction of knowing, I have the vehicle I want, at the price I want, with the features I need and want and I will have it if all goes well for at least the next 10 years.

Post a CommentI ended up buying a Hyundai because of its 100 K warranty but I hear that GM bought them.
Yes, happy shopping!
I hate that you feel frightened because of your race. It is risky for any woman , black or white who travels alone these days.. We have had On-Star for 6 years, and my husband used the panic button for the first time last month, when he got bumped during a thunderstorm....The police and help came quickly and he was very satisfied. I heard an ad saying you can get the On-Star set-up separately at Best Buy.....Take Care
Good luck, may the best car win (:
Happy shopping!
I can relate to your opening sentence and Good Luck with the car you finally choose.
I think that our next mode of transportation will be horse and buggy! In our area we actually are permitted to drive a horse and buggy to the grocery store! Great article and tips! I always wait for my Dad's hand me down GM automobile! He gave me his Buick when it only had 35,000 miles on it.
Good luck with your purchase! Great article!
No Abby OnStar is not just on GM vehicles. I have an Acura 3.5 RL with 'from the factory OnStar.'
I ended up buying a used Sentra. It was what we could afford - but truthfully, I'm so direction deficit and with the amount of driving I am doing for the newspaper these days - I really needed an OnStar. I have ended up on too many dead-ends! I do not have a GPS but our roads are constantly detoured around here and I have heard they are useless when that does happen!
