Will a Red Car Affect My Auto Insurance Premium?

Does Driving Red Cost You More Green?

Are you holding off on that red car because you fear your insurance premiums will skyrocket? Don't! Although it's a popularly held belief that red cars cost more to insure than other colors, it's just not true. Your insurance premium does not take into account your car color in any way. So, red car lovers rejoice and take heart because you can sport the color of your dreams and still keep the green in your wallet.

How do I know? Because I had a beautiful cherry red Jeep and it didn't cost me any more to insure it than it did the other cars on my policy. And as I tooled around town I didn't get pulled over any more than anyone else. In fact, I didn't get pulled over at all. Ever. Now I drive a silver car and my premiums didn't go down. As a side note, I'm happy to report I still haven't been pulled over either.

The reason for the misconception is most likely that most sports cars are bought in red and having a sports car will increase your premium. The popularity of the color amongst sports car enthusiasts just means that poor red gets to take the blame.

If you find that your current insurance carrier is trying to charge you more based on color alone then it's time to take your business elsewhere. Shop around and spend your money on a company that won't have you seeing red even if you are driving it.
