Will Same Sex Marriage Pass in Washington D.C.?

Will Washington D.C. Join Iowa, Massachusetts, Connecticut and Vermont?

Jolie du Pre
As reported in Out in Washington D.C, the "Religious Freedom and Civil Marriage Equality Amendment Act of 2009" has been introduced in Washington D.C. to allow same sex couples to legally marry there. Currently, Washington D.C. only recognizes same sex marriages that happen elsewhere.

Same sex marriage is legal in Iowa, Massachusetts, Connecticut and Vermont. If the bill for Washington D.C. passes, it will be another notch on the belt of the LGBT community.

Will same sex marriage pass in Washington DC? The possibility is better than ever.

The LGBT community is coming out of a period of relative silence. During the days of the openly gay politician and activist Harvey Milk in the 1970's, the LGBT community was significantly active. However, in the early 1980's, gay men were dying of Acquired immune deficiency syndrome or AIDS, which contributed to the homophobia and discrimination that existed, making an argument in support of the LGBT community even more difficult. In 1998, gay college student Matthew Shepard was tortured and killed in Wyoming. However, the straw that broke the camel's back was the passing of Proposition 8 in California in 2008, which eliminated the ability for same sex couples to marry there.

Now the waving of the rainbow flags, the annual gay pride parades and the occasional celebrity coming out of the closet is no longer enough for the LGBT community. Same sex marriage in Washington D.C. will be the type of victory that the Equality Across America campaign is seeking. With an aim to bring equality for the LGBT community in all 50 states, the kick-off begins with the National Equality March. The march, a gathering of thousands of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people, is to be held on October 10 - 11, 2009 in Washington D.C.

Although the same sex marriage bill is likely to pass in Washington DC, if same sex couples are allowed to marry in Washington D.C., it will not be without a battle. The National Organization for Marriage is a group that was significant in reversing same sex marriage in California. The group now has its sights on Iowa, and it stands to reason that the other states will also be targets. Whether or not the LGBT community will be successful against the National Organization for Marriage, and other groups in opposition of same sex marriage, will come down to how together the LGBT community is. Many members of the community are still deep in the closet, fearful of repercussions. Fighting oppression is difficult to do if you are in the closet.

Jolie - thanks for your comment on my Pro-lifer murder article. I really appreciated that there ARE liberals who realize the media is pro-liberal! Although you probably know you and I can't agree on everything - for the record, I do not believe same-sex marriage can "ruin traditional marriage." With the divorce rate at 51% in church and outside of church among heterosexual couples, straight people apparently are doing a fine job of ruining it themselves!

Wonderfully written Jolie, Thanks!!!!!!!!!! It should pass, being that it's the LGBT capital of USA:) I went with my uncle to a pride parade in the mid-90's and will never forget how nasty the 'christians' were. I support EQUAL rights for ALL!!
