Will Scott Brown Be the GOP Presidential Candidate for 2012?
Things Are Already Shaping Up for the 2012 Race
This evokes a crystal ball prediction. Are Republican leaders, still hurting from their 2008 defeat for the Presidency, beginning to sit up and take notice of Brown? After McCain's downfall, they desperately need a viable candidate, possibly one with the youthful good looks, speaking ability and energy of a Jack Kennedy or Barack Obama.
Scott Brown fought a smart election fight. Despite the last-ditch campaign stumping by President Obama and the late Ted Kennedy's widow stumping for Martha Coakley, the Democrats lost the Massachusetts Senate seat. The Commonwealth's well-known Attorney General Coakley went from sure winner over almost-unknown Scott Brown to dismal failure by the days before the election.
Brown's very effective campaigning may be summed up by his outspoken statement that may rival "Damn the torpedos" or "We have not yet begun to fight". He responded angrily in a debate, referring the position of U.S. Senator, "It's not the Kennedy seat, it's not the Democrats' seat, it's the people's seat."
The late Ted Kennedy's long record of advocating government-run healthcare was negated by the Brown win. By taking the Kennedy seat in the Senate, Brown may have eliminated the Democratic majority that would have made the Obama healthcare plan assured of Congressional passage.
So, who is this upstart who has come to the Senate looking like Jimmy Stewart from the movie, "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington"? As an ex-model, Scott Brown certainly has the sharp good looks of vintage movie star Stewart, and ... dare we say it? ... John F. Kennedy?
Young Jack Kennedy's World War II record of Navy heroism as a PT Boat skipper in the Pacific helped him win his first term as Senator from Massachusets, and eventually the Presidency. While Brown does have an impressive military record, it hasn't included any wartime active duty nor actual combat, although he did do brief assignments in Kazakhstan and Paraguy.
He joined the Massachusetts National Guard as a teenager, earned a commission and is about to retire as a lieutenant colonel. Brown is a strong supporter of the current American military operations in the Middle East, veterans' rights and advocates trials of terrorists by military courts.
As for Brown's qualifications to serve in the Senate, he certainly has more governmental experience than Ted Kennedy did when he first represented Massachusetts in Washington in 1963. Kennedy had never been elected to anything, but was swept in by his brother John's enormous popularity and family wealth.
Scott Brown is not from a rich family and has worked his way up from the bottom in politics step-by-step as he did in the National Guard. He started as a town alderman, served as city attorney and then in the Massachusetts State House and Senate. Brown is married to Boston TV anchor Gail Huff, and they are parents of two grown-up daughters, Ayla and Arianna.
Now, with his sudden brilliant performance in the national spotlight, Scott Brown may have potential of going even higher than his new seat in the Senate. It's almost certain that at this very moment, influential Republicans are already gathering in their smoke-filled rooms. They're probably deep in discussion about how to groom this upstart to be the Kennedyesque, Obamaesque or even Reaganesque hope for their 2012 Presidential campaign.
Unlike many other troubled politicans of late, Scott Brown has nothing to hide from the American public. As a teenage college student, he posed nude for Cosmopolitan Magazine.
