Will Tedy Bruschi Retire? Patriots' Fans Won't Be Surprised

Rumors of Tedy Bruschi's Retirement Sadden Fans, but Are Expected

Tamara McRill
Rumors are rampant that New England Patriots' linebacker Tedy Bruschi's retirement is imminent. NBC's Al Michaels announced it during the Sunday Night Football. The Patriots' press release only stated that they will be making an "important player announcement" Monday, at 10:45 a.m. If Tedy Bruschi retires, those of us Patriot fans who have been paying attention will not be surprised.

Fans Expect Tedy Bruschi's Retirement
It seems harsh for a Patriot fan to expect Tedy Bruschi's retirement. After all, Bruschi made an amazing stroke recovery in 2005 and went on to play hard, committed NFL football. This won him the NFL's Comeback Player of the Year and the hearts of many fans. Bruschi then proceeded to lead the Patriots in regular season and play-off tackles, in 2006 and 2007.

But, the signs of Tedy Bruschi's retirement are there and it may be time for him to leave the game. Fans took notice of Bruschi's long absence from training camp practice, for an undisclosed injury. He was then regulated to the second unit. Friday's exhibition game against the Redskins indicates that his playing has declined.

Even if his game wasn't slipping, fans could hear forecasts of Tedy Bruschi's retirement in his words. By his own admission, Bruschi has been regulated to a more fatherly, than warrior-like role. He has made claims to be okay with this type of leadership and has expressed his willingness to back up coaches. This sounds like a player who is ready to coach from the sidelines.

Tedy Bruschi's Career Highlights
If Tedy Bruschi's retires, it will be the end of a 13-year NFL career. He was drafted by the New England Patriots in 1996, a third round pick. Bruschi has been the Patriots' defensive captain seven times, with the last time being in 2008. He has played in five of the Patriots' six Super Bowl appearances. Three of those five were Super Bowl wins. Bruschi has also played in nine play-off seasons and eight division championships.

Tedy Bruschi Retires a True Patriot
What makes Tedy Bruschi a true Patriot is not just his Super Bowl appearances or total tackles. If Tedy Bruschi retires, he would have been a New England Patriot his entire NFL career. It is not like he hasn't had other offers. He has often stated his desire to only play for one team and his slight aversion for players who do not. Bruschi has even negotiated his own contract, for less money than he would have received playing for another team. Tedy Bruschi may just retire the biggest Patriot fan of all.
