Today, phones with full size keyboards are becoming the norm, so typing longer messages more quickly is becoming a heck of a lot easier. Blackberries, before the iPhone were the number one smart phones out on the market, were mostly used by business men and women who needed to type out longer messages, such as emails. Today, the iPhone and Android smart phones are becoming the norm with an ever increasing number of everyday users buying smart phones. It's now not just your mom or dad with a smart phone, it actually now is becoming more and more popular with kids and young adults.
Text messaging is really outdated and can only be used to send quick, short and almost cryptic messages. Even instant messenger messages can be longer. Also, if you want to send media such as pictures its sent via mms two different services. For awhile mms wasn't exactly supported very well even on smart phones such as the iPhone, but maybe Apple did not forget to add mms but in fact was looking way into the future and saw that texting will in fact be outdated rather sooner than later.
Why text/mms when you can email? The only reason why I can see texting beating email at this point is because not everyone has phones that have email on them. But when you and your friends both have email capable smart phones think about it why would you text him? With email you can still send an "instant" message to your buddy, but you can type out a message of unlimited length and you can easily insert images or other files along with the email. So if all your friends have smart phones why wouldn't you just send an email?
I believe that right now we are currently on the brink of text messaging becoming obsolete; the iPhone was the first smart phone that has become widely available and Android is really bringing it into the mainstream. It also seems like the move to only data plans is also in the near future with companies such as Google trying to incorporate voip calling with things such as Google Voice. When cell phone service move just toward data plans and everyone has a smart phone texting will be ancient history. Just Imagine being able to think past 160 characters!
