This season finds the Botwins on the run from the authorities and Mexican gangsters after Shane, kills Pilar, the woman behind Esteban's shady political campaign. Surely, the Mexican mobsters will still be an integral part of the plot, but perhaps less so than the last season, which got a little carried away with the high profile drug trafficking. Ultimately, viewers still want the show to be about a hardworking single mother peddling drugs.
While the stakes are definitely raised now that the youngest Botwin is a murderer, if the season premiere is any indication, this season will be a lot more focused on the family dynamic than it was last season. The show's focus had shifted to Nancy and Esteban's relationship, while practically ignoring her older kids, who became minimally visible in their own drug endeavors. This was certainly a reflection of Nancy's neglect but audiences can only take so much. We can forgive the drug trade if it's done in the name of family, but if you stop caring about the family, what's the point?
Nancy has become downright dislikable with the way she's treated her kids. Hopefully, now that she's stuck with them on the road, she might redeem herself. Perhaps she'll take the fall for Shane's transgression, though that's doubtful. The writers might have the guts to completely shift the plot and location every single season, but we don't think they're ready to put their protagonist behind bars.
Speculation aside, with everyone reacting to the shocking news that little Shane killed someone, this season is definitely promising. In addition to being stuck with the kids, Nancy is now on the road with lovable Andy, who spent most of last season in love with her. We're rooting for them and this season undoubtedly holds some interesting twists and turns regarding the pair.
According to the season trailer, the Botwins are headed north. But we would love it if they would just go back to Agrestic, where it all started. The town has to have recovered from the season 3 fires by now, right? Maybe Conrad and Heylia can help them hide out there. That's definitely wishful thinking but here's hoping that this season brings tons of adventures and hilarity from the road.
