This new Mobile OS shows that Microsoft is in the battle for the long haul. They are looking at ways to gain significant market share and compete directly with Apple. There are five immediate areas that Microsoft is taking the mobile phone to the next level. These areas are:
• Email & Personal Information Management
• Photos and Multimedia
• Internet Exploring
• Gaming
• Availability
The first major improvement is the PIM (Personal Information Management) side of the house, the new interface allows you to see how many unread emails, Facebook content, etc that you have unread by just looking at the application's tile. This feature alone is revolutionary, because this is pulling real time data. Next on the list is organizing your contacts and finding them quickly. Microsoft Windows & expands the search feature by creating a "Most Used" list and places the people that you contact in this category so when you search for a contact you can look here first and because you call or text them all the time they are on the top of your list. There are additional search options, for example by bringing up the alphabet you can touch "P", and you are shown the list of contacts that start with "P".
The next area that Microsoft is making major improvements is in the Photo and Multimedia section. The new OS7 Mobile allows for better organization, viewing and sharing of all your photos and videos. Being a true Wi-Fi unit, it will connect to devices like your home computer and the Internet and allow you to share, search, and view simply and easily. This is really a one stop shop for pictures, video, music, radio, anything that is multimedia.
Bing is built into the main OS so that everything becomes something that you can do a search on. From email to reading a story from the Internet, one can open Bing and the search will take you to that topic on Bing and allow you to find information quickly and easily. This is especially helpful when you need that map in a hurry.
Windows Mobile 7 offers a new look and feel to the gaming world. First, the Mobile OS is the only official Xbox LIVE experience on a phone, and this OS allows you to play against your friends. The new Marketplace allows you to download new apps and games quickly and easily.
Finally, I think that the new Microsoft OS 7 Mobile will give Apple iPhone a run for the money due to the compatibility and availability of devices that the OS is planned to be installed on in the near future. Microsoft is collaborating with mobile operators: AT&T, Deutsche Telekom AG, Orange, SFR, Sprint, Telecom Italia, Telefónica, Telstra, T-Mobile USA, Verizon Wireless and Vodafone. Along with working with the following manufactures of mobile devices: Dell, Garmin-Asus, HTC Corp., HP, LG, Samsung, Sony Ericsson, Toshiba and Qualcomm Inc.
Yes Microsoft is showing some features that will make the iPhone users jealous as they have to hit more buttons to find people, open email boxes to see what is there, etc. Microsoft has once again put together a product that will gain significant market share. Time will only tell if the new OS can Trump the iPhone. One difficult part to overcome is that while the OS 7 for Mobile devices is ready, it will be another ten months before we see products on the shelf with the OS as the first mobile devices to be sold will be just before Christmas 2010, allowing the king of mobile OS's (iPhone) to have more time to gain a substantial customer base. But by offering the OS 7 Mobile to a number of carriers and manufactures, Microsoft can gain a good market share quickly due to availability. The battle is just beginning.
