William and Kate's Wedding Cake

Wedding Cake Ideas for Prince William and Kate Middleton

Kay Whittenhauer
Prince William of Wales and Catherine Elizabeth Middleton announced plans for an April 29, 2011 wedding. When I heard this news on TV, I (like most foodies) couldn't help but wonder what the cake is going to be like!

When Will's parents, Prince Charles and Lady Diana, married in 1981 they had 27 cakes at their wedding reception! What are the chances that Will and Kate will follow in his parents footsteps and have 27 cakes at their reception? It's doubtful, as Britain's newest royal couple is recognizing the recession by planning what, by royal standards, is considered to be a low-key wedding.

One of Prince Charles and Lady Di's wedding cakes was a six foot tall hand painted fruit cake. Traditionally, the top layer of a wedding cake was saved for the couple to enjoy on their first wedding anniversary and because fruit cake has an extremely long shelf life, it just made sense to make the top layer fruit cake. (In the case of Charles and Di, "the top layer" turned out to be six feet tall.) The tradition of saving the fruit cake layer for the first anniversary has fallen out of favor in Britain, so it's not likely that Will and Kate will have a fruit cake wedding cake at their reception.

We have a good idea of what Will and Kate's wedding cake won't taste like, but we still wonder what it will look like. According to Niemierko at Aisle Dash, "The royal wedding cake is likely to be tall, fabulous and white." He goes on to say that the couple will probably "opt for a more modern cake". We can't be sure what this speculation is based on, but if I had to bet, I'd put money on tall, fabulous, and white, too. (That's kind of a no-brainer, isn't it?) Niemierko points to a tall, white wedding cake from American cake decorator Sylvia Weinstock as an example. The cake is absolutely gorgeous, but if I had to bet I would not put money on an American. I think Will and Kate will opt for a British wedding cake designer.

The blog at Wedding Ideas Mag has a picture of what they think Will and Kate's wedding cake will look like, but they made a huge mistake! They have the initials "W" and "K" repeating around the cake. The fact is, when "Kate" becomes royalty she will be referred to as Catherine, with the letter "C". Wedding Idea Mag also speculates that Will and Kate will have a tall, white wedding cake.

The only thing we know for sure about the cake is that Kate wants an organic and fair trade cake. I think that's really cool. I like the fact that she's using her wedding to make a political statement. (Go, Kate!)

We foodies can't wait to see Will and Kate's wedding cake! I'm sure there are many brides who can't wait either- Will and Kate's wedding cake is sure to set the trend for wedding cakes in the next couple of years.

So it won't have those plastic bridesmaids and groomsmen on stairs beside the cake? Darn. That's always such a classy touch! LMAO--

Love it! I think they'll go more low-key than William's parents - and that would be okay :) Hey, I also enjoyed your mental health article - tried to comment but couldn't. I think my mom needs an intervention of some type but it's so dicey when it's a relative!!
