Accidental drowning in children is a tragic occurrence in the United States and worldwide. Statistics show that accidental drowning is the second leading cause of death in children under the age of 18. There were 283 fatal drowning for children and an additional 2100 were treated in emergency rooms for submersion related injuries in just a two year period reported from 2005 to 2007. Children under the age of two also drown in bathtubs, inflatable pools, home hot tubs, 5 gallon buckets, landscape fish ponds, fountains, outdoor trash cans and even toilets. Children can drown in as little of two inches of water. Their curious nature and top heavy anatomy often can contribute to getting in trouble. Every thing parents and grandparents learn about water safety can help to lower these tragic occurrences.
In memory of William, his family has established the William Lee Montjoy Children's Educational Fund. The purpose of the William Lee Montjoy Fund is to provide educational, recreational and cultural experiences for Mississippi Gulf Coast children.
William's love for school, nature, and music inspired his family and friends to begin a fundraiser for William which they have named William's Wings. The Rock n' Roll Mardi Gras Marathon in New Orleans, La on February 13, 2011 is an event where proceeds are donated to The American Cancer Society.
Lively William loved for his "funny mommy" to "play me some rock-n-roll music". So appropriately, the family and friends of William are establishing a William's Wings Team to participate in the Rock n' Roll Marathon in memory of William and to help raise money for the William Lee Montjoy Children's Educational Fund. The William's Wings Team will gather together to participate in the Mardi Gras marathon and half marathon. Team Sponsors and participants can join by going to the website at williamswings.com. The donations are channeled through The Gulf Coast Community Foundation of Mississippi which manages funds for charitable giving. All donations are tax-deductible.
