Willis McGahee Appears OK After Injury on Field

Ravens Running Back OK After Head to Head Collision with Steelers Ryan Clark

Ravens running back Willis McGahee was injured in the 4th quarter during the AFC Championship Game on Sunday night. While both players initially appeared to be injured, Ryan Clark walked off the field on his own accord. Willis McGahee was not as lucky. Ravens staff attended to him for several minutes before calling for a stretcher. At first it appeared to be a potentially serious spine or head injury.

This was an incredible hit. I cringed as I watched it. There was no deliberate attempt from Steelers Ryan Clark to cause injury and the hit was legal. After Willis McGahee made the 11 yard reception from Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco, he collided with Steelers safety Ryan Clark. The collision of Clark's helmet to the face mask and front part of McGahee's helmet resulted in both men down on the field for a short time. Ryan Clark was able to walk off the field. However, Willis McGahee was placed on a back board and driven off the field on a stretcher.

Contact between the two men was unavoidable. The hit was a legal tackle and the resulting injury was unintentional. Ryan Clark made a legal tackle, the helmet collision was the result of the force of two large men colliding. This was a hard hitting, physical game but that is what football is supposed to be. If it were easy, everyone would be playing pro ball.

Willis McGahee is recuperating at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital. The latest statement from the hospital is that he is "neurologically sound", and is able to move all of his limbs. This is wonderful news. It is a terrible thing when a player gets hurt, especially when the injury has the potential to be life altering. We are all glad that this was not a more serious injury.

The Pittsburgh Steelers defeated the Baltimore Ravens 23 - 14 to win the AFC Championship. They will go up against the Arizona Cardinals in Super Bowl XLIII on February 1, 2009 in Tampa, Florida.

I am glad he seems to be okay. Sorry they didn't win but as long as he is well there's always next season. Good Luck and God Bless.
