Willis McGahee Update

Sherrill Fulghum
Late in the AFC Championship game (fourth quarter) between the Baltimore Ravens and the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday evening, January 18, running back Willis McGahee and free safety Ryan Clark collided when Clark tackled McGahee in a hard hit that sent both players to the ground.

Clark walked off the field with some assistance from Steelers staff shortly after the hit. Clark was obviously dazed but appeared to otherwise be in good shape. McGahee on the other hand remained on the field in what are always tense moments. Surrounded by numerous staff members, players, and medical personnel, McGahee could be seen moving his arms and legs.

In recent years the NFL has taken great precautions when it comes to players being hit on and around the head and neck area. Players are immobilized and taken off the filed on a stretcher using a cart. Only after extensive medical examinations are players allowed to leave a medical facility.

While the game was still in progress CBS reported that the Baltimore Ravens sent word saying McGahee was able to move his arms and legs without difficulty but that he was having severe neck pain. McGahee was taken to a local hospital for examination and observation.

According to a news report on the NFL website, Willis McGahee was released from a Pittsburgh hospital this morning and returned to his home in the Baltimore area. Specifics of exactly what his injury was were not stated; only that Willis McGahee is expected to make a full recovery from head and neck injuries.

With the loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers the Baltimore Ravens and Willis McGahee will not have to worry about trying to get ready for the game in Tampa on February 1. McGahee will have time to ensure he is fully recovered and ready to play next summer when players once again return to camp to prepare for the next season.

While it is disturbing to see any player (even if it is for the team you don't like) carted off the field; it is always good news to hear that the player did not receive injuries that will end his career as a football player.

A wicked hit; glad McGahee is not seriously injured.

Crushing late hit? I certainly hope you don't mean the hit came after the whistle or out of bounds.....it was late in the game but in no means....a late hit.
