Wilson, Oklahoma Elementary School Receives Model School Award

On Friday, Feb 27, Ms. Regina Farquhar, site mentor and charter member of the Great Expectations Foundation, presented Wilson Elementary School Principal Denise Brunk, their highest level of recognition, the Model School Award. According to the Tahlequah, Oklahoma-based professional development program that provides teachers and administrators with the skills needed to create harmony and excitement within the school atmosphere, this year's prestigious award was earned by only 59 elementary schools across the nation.

In order to meet Great Expectations' stringent criteria for the Model School Award, schools must minimally, have a 90% staff participation that includes a weeklong workshop where teachers are taught to implement the 17 practices of addressing the crucial needs of students preparing for a demanding future. For the last five years, Supt. Kevin Stinson has successfully applied and received grants to educate the entire elementary school teaching staff. Prior to his current position as Wilson School superintendent, Mr. Stinson was responsible for Charles Evans Elementary School being Ardmore's first school to receive the coveted Model School Award.

In addition to the regular monthly elementary school Rise And Shine assembly and Ms. Farquhar's presentation of the Model School Award, District 48 State Representative Pat Owenby congratulated and encouraged the enthusiastic student body to continue their outstanding effort. Also present for the recognition ceremony, was Regional Head Start Director Jeff Alexander, Mayor Bud Young, School Board President Tommie Sue Idleman, a couple local pastors, and an auditorium full of supportive parents and family.
