Wilson Staff Di7 Irons Review

Long!

Wilson Golf has led a quite charge back into the spotlight with its last few series of golf equipment. The Deep Red and now the Staff series has done a lot for the once mighty club maker. The British Open last Summer does not hurt much either! I will be writing a series of reviews of their equipment for the 2008 series to give everyone an idea of the steps Wilson Golf is taking to get back into the game!

At first glance the Wilson Staff Di7 irons look similar to the old Deep Red II Distance irons. The large head and Fat Shaft are still there, and while Wilson gives them a nice polished finish to make them look as "clean" as possible, golfers from 0-30 handicappers know that this set was made for those who need a little help from their equipment. What makes this set different from any other Wilson has put out in the past few years are this: The large, undercut cavity really moves weight lower in the club head as well as further away from the face. This will create a low center of gravity that will not only be more forgiving, but launch the ball higher into the air for the average player. The next step is the amount of loft. I should actually say the lack of loft because these babies are juiced! They are a club to club and a half stronger, but with the head design, matched with lightweight, low bend point shafts you really do not notice any difference in trajectory! So in the end what you get is a very forgiving, very long iron!

When I first set them down I of course noticed Wilson's Fat Shaft has made its way back into the line up! It looks OK with the larger head and definitely helps stabilize the club head through impact. The look is as "clean" as it can get as I mentioned before, and the set felt very light in my hands. My first few balls were rockets! The technology in the head matched with the shafts made the ball jump off the face and soar into the air. I used a 6 iron with a Regular flex shaft and was hitting it about as far as the MacGregor MacTec NVG2 Mid Irons. (see review) I wont put these above them for two reasons however. I could not work this iron very well unless I wanted to hit a low hook, and it does look a little bulky. I hit several shots "off-center" to see how it would react to miss hits and it performed very well. I did not loose much distance and the shots still went straight.

I would get this set if you need help getting the ball down the fairway, as well as hitting it in the air. The Wilson Staff Di7's are also very affordable at under $500!
