Wimbledon Semifinals Start with Epic Serena Williams Win

Robert Dougherty
The Wimbledon semifinals have already kicked off, as the Wimbledon semifinals went as expected for Serena Williams. However, advancing from the Wimbledon semifinals wasn't as easy for Serena Williams as many expected. Today, the Wimbledon semifinals buzz is all around the Williams sisters, as Serena and Venus try to move on to face each other in another Wimbledon final. Serena Williams is already through the Wimbledon semifinals, but not without a big test from Elena Dementieva.

The Wimbledon semifinals today were largely expected to be a walk for Serena and Venus Williams. But Serena Williams was one point away from going down against Elena Dementieva and ruining an all-Williams final.

However, Serena Williams rallied from match point, broke Elena Dementieva, and won the first Wimbledon semifinal in as close a match as possible. The 6-7, 7-5, 8-6 win put Serena Williams in another Wimbledon final.

The first of the Wimbledon semifinals kicked off the round in high fashion, as Williams and Dementieva played for nearly three hours. After a lack of many thrills and upsets thus far at Wimbledon, the first of the semifinals matches nearly provided both.

The Wimbledon semifinals conclude for the day with Venus Williams trying to join her sister in Saturday's title match. Even though Venus is playing top seeded Dinara Safina, she is still a heavy favorite. Mainly because she is Venus Williams and most everyone wants a Venus-Serena final, and also because Safina is still looking to win her first Grand Slam final.

Once the women finish their half of the Wimbledon semifinals, the men will take Centre Court tomorrow. The male semifinals pit heavy favorite Roger Federer against upstart Tommy Hass, and Britain's favorite player, Andy Murray, against Andy Roddick.

This year's Wimbledon semifinals offer the possibility of some downright historic championship matches. Venus and Serena Williams always attract huge attention when they face each other in a major, although their actual matches often live down to the hype.

For the men, if Federer and Murray make it out of the semifinals, their final would make history either way. Federer would either win his record setting 15'th Grand Slam, or Murray would be the first British player to win Wimbledon in over 70 years - although Murray is Scottish. Some are even speculating that Queen Elizabeth could come down to watch if Murray gets to the final.

But before Britain builds up the hype for that, Venus Williams will try to complete the hype for another Williams Grand Slam final, if she can match Serena's efforts later today.
