Wind Lesson Plan for Preschool

Wind is an abstract yet fascinating topic for preschool aged students, especially when the wind is blustering outside. This lesson is geared for small groups, whole classes, and homeschool settings.

Paper Plate Kite

Have students decorate a paper plate with markers, crayons, and stickers. Staple several paper streamers to the edges of the plate and attach a string to the center of a plate. Attach the other end of the string to a short stick and let the children take their kites outside on a windy day to fly them.

Who Has Seen the Wind Poem

Read the poem, Who Has Seen the Wind? by Christina Rossetti and discuss other signs that the wind is blowing:

Who has seen the wind?
Neither I nor you.
But when the leaves hang trembling,
The wind is passing through.
Who has seen the wind?
Neither you nor I.
But when the trees bow down their heads,
The wind is passing by.

Floating Feather Game

Give each student a feather (craft stores sell packages of colorful feathers). Challenge them to see how long they can keep the feather in the air without touching it. They can only use their breath to keep it afloat.

Tiny Windsocks

Give your students a toilet paper roll and let them decorate it with washable paint and stickers. Glue or staple pieces of ribbon or strips of crepe paper to one end and staple a piece of string to the other end for a hangar. Hang the windsocks outside to see which way the wind is blowing.

Bubbles and Wind

Blow bubbles outside on a breezy day and observe which way the bubbles float. Ask students if they can figure out which way the wind is blowing by the direction of the bubbles.
