Windows 7: Will They Fix the Mistakes of Vista?

Jeffrey Bode
Microsoft has begun producing a new operating system. The seventh version of Windows is unlike all the others. After watching numerous YouTube videos on the product, I question if these videos are the real deal or will Microsoft actually leave out some of these features.

To be clear the official name for the product will not be Windows 7, given that the last few versions of Windows were not named after their version numbers. I have no speculation about the official name and am unaware of any potential names at this time.

So what features does Windows 7 have? From what I have seen on YouTube it seems to have an iPhone type feel to it, since most of the videos are of touch screen computers. The videos show it organizing and resizing pictures much like the iphone does. They also use a similar concept for maps, when you spread your fingers apart you zoom in. When you move your fingers the image moves.

Another touch screen feature I've seen is the piano; you scroll your figure on each key or across the keys to play the piano. This may be very useful from a musical standpoint. I would imagine that you could do this with other instruments. I've seen a similar product to this that you use the mouse to play instruments called Cakewalk Studio Instruments.

From one of the videos on YouTube it talks about reducing the size of the software, if in fact the software size is reduce and requires less memory to run will it be faster or will it result in more problems? It's hard to say at this point if they are making it smaller or more efficient.

One much needed improvement is that they claim to be adding desktop icon management similar to rocket dock and the Apple OSX. The current version requires you to separately find and download software to better manage your icons such as Rocket Dock, the app launcher sidebar gadget and many others.

They also claim that Windows 7 will be more like Office 2007. Many people don't know how to use the tab function of Office 2007, but I agree it is more practical and is a much needed improvement in the new operating system.

I also think they should allow you to change the style and color of the taskbar. They may want to consider allowing the option of making the sidebar and taskbar into on unit. I like to constantly change the look and feel of my desktop so the more options the better. I think many people get bored with seeing the same desktop screen. Most people don't know how to modify their taskbar let alone the sidebar and other features. Easy access to instructions or a help icon would help the common computer user.

There are other issues that require fixing as well; there are many possibilities and improvements that may actually put the sales of the new operating system (Windows 7) up to the level of Windows XP. It needs to be quality, practical and functional software that can adapt to older software as well as new software.

The consensus does seem to point to Windows 7 as being the official name of it. People seem to be adamant about it, and they should call it 7. Though some propeller heads can't get over the fact that 7 only works when you take the NT numbering scheme into consideration it speaks to simplicity. Check out http://gizmodo.com/5069661/windows-7-walkthrough-boot-video-and-impressions there are a ton of features you hadn't mentioned in this post. Overall I found Windows 7 to be promising but not totally necessary; some of those speed improvements could and should be done under the hood in Vista without having to hide behind extra bells and whistles. A lot of what 7 offers I will never use, just like a lot of Office 2007 I don't use. I do agree that 7 has the potential, if nothing is left out, truly because we got shortchanged on Vista, of finally beating out XP and putting that dinosaur to rest.
