Windows Open

April Higney
She quietly hummed an old song she heard,

laundry, white sheets waving with a gentle breeze,

her child laughing, swinging to and fro,

the love in that smile she sees.

Windows open, taking in the summer air,

a stereo playing her favorite tune,

her child's toys lining her room's floor,

picking up and smiling, as she drinks coffee into the afternoon.

She quietly hummed an old song she heard,

as she views the rolling countryside of the home of family,

her child laughing, ring-around-the-rosie with Nana, such fun,

the love in the connection she can see.

Windows open, taking in the summer air,

she breathes in deep to take it all in,

gentle eyes open the door to meet hers,

her child laughing runs ahead to greet his happy grin.

She quietly hummed an old song she heard,

her child sleeps in calm after a bath and chocolate ice cream.

He embraces her, both smiling,

in a summer dream.

Windows open, taking in the summer air,

a stereo playing her favorite tune,

she breathes in deep, he leaves her breathless in a soft kiss,

smiles for the dream in the summer warmth of June.
