Windows XP Service Pack 3: A Brief Overview

Feature Highlights of the New Windows XP SP3

The Armchair Geek
To improve the efficiency and functionality of its popular Windows operating system, Microsoft develops fixes, updates and select enhancements. These are based on feedback that it continually collects from Windows users. These are bundled into one package, which Microsoft calls a "Service pack." Windows XP Service Pack (Windows XP SP3) was released in May 2008. It will be integrated into Windows XP's Automatic Update by July this year.

The new Windows XP SP3 offers many functions that have been backported from Windows Vista. More than 1,174 fixes and patches have also been included in this bundle of updates. It is notable that Internet Explorer is not included as a part of Service Pack 3, although the service pack does include some updates for IE6 and IE7. Internet Explorer can be easily downloaded at Microsoft's website.

Some of the new features in the Windows XP Service Pack 3 include Network Access Protection, Black hole router detection, a Window Imaging Component, a credentials security service provider, more descriptive security options in Group Policy and Local Security Policy, and Microsoft's Kernel Mode Cryptographic Module.

You do not need a product key to install XP SP3 for retail and OEM versions. The integrated OEM and retail version of Windows XP with Service Pack 3 can be installed and used in full functionality for up to 30 days without this product key. After this trial period, users will be asked to enter a valid key and activate the installation.

Despite the fact that most Windows service packs were cumulative, Windows Service Pack 3 does require Service Pack 1 before installation. It is possible, however, to slipstream Service Pack 3 into your Windows XP setup files without any issues. It is also recommended that you have Windows XP Service Pack 2 installed before you setup Service Pack 3.

There are minimum hardware requirements for installing Service Pack 3. Your computer will have to have:
*A CD-ROM drive
*A 233 megahertz processor with at least 64 megabytes of RAM
*900 megabytes of hard drive space or more

You can install Windows XP SP3 on most versions of Windows XP including Tablet PC Edition 2005. It cannot, however, be installed on Windows XP Professional x64 or Windows XP Embedded.

Before you install Windows XP SP3, back up all your files to a flash drive or other external storage device. If you using Windows XP Professional, it is recommended that you create an Automated System Recovery set before you install SP3. To begin the installation, close all open programs and log onto your computer as an administrator. Launch the installation.
