Wine Review: Don Luciano La Mancha Syrah 2008

Nice Quality Wine for the Price

Angelica Mordant
Recently, I had the opportunity to taste a 2008 syrah by Don Luciano (La Mancha). Being a little apprehensive due to the very low cost, I was pleasantly surprised by the quality. The decidedly sweet black cherry yet fruity tones were a treat to my palate. With syrah/shiraz wines usually having more plum tones (and sometimes spicy), this wine was a welcome change from the norm. It's medium body and low to moderate acidity was complimented by the elegant and smooth finish with a soft tannin. The finish I must admit was a wee bit on the low side yet still quite acceptable. I suggest this wine with grilled meat such as lamb or beef steak.

Don Luciano wine is a product of La Mancha, Spain one of the largest red wine growing areas in the world. Spanish wines tend to be a bit smoother than say Californian wines, but since I prefer smoother wines, I must say this is one I would not hesitate to purchase again. Hey at that price I may even get a few to keep in the wine cellar. Who cares if it is less than $4.00 a bottle?

I have had the opportunity to taste most Don Luciano wines and am each time pleasantly surprised at the quality considering how inexpensive they are although the others are not quite as good as this syrah. Does this wine compare with more expensive wine? Well, not really. Much in the same way a good burger is not the same as a steak, yet still quite enjoyable, so is this wine. It is still of good quality and very pleasant with dinner or alone. I give this wine a 4 out of 5.
