Wine Review: Lucky Duck Cabernet Sauvignon 2008?

Delightful Quality Despite the Low Price

Angelica Mordant
Being a fan of cherry tones in wine, I snatched up this cabernet to once again see if a decent quality wine could be found despite a low price. I was delightfully surprised. I've learned that price is not always an indicator of taste.

This gem of a cabernet is a product of Chile which is the 4th leading exporter of wine to the U.S. Chile was previously thought to produce low quality wines but is quickly becoming the new favorite due to it's favorable growing conditions. The climate is said to be somewhere between that of France and California.

The wine's deep cherry color was the perfect compliment to the pleasant cherry bouquet. It's strong cherry notes and a hint of blackberry were balanced well and a treat for my palate. This full bodied cabernet was velvety smooth from show to finish which was a bit on the low side, yet expected with such a low price. The tannins being deliciously soft again considering the price were a treat. This is a wonderful wine by itself, which is my preference or would pair nicely with venison. I liked this wine at room temperature due to the flavors being more prominent. I did notice however, that cheese seemed to muddy the flavors a bit which seemed to take away from the complexity of this wine as if to waste it.

I highly recommend this sleeper of a cabernet and will be sure to keep a supply of it in my own cellar. Who cares if it's less than $4.00? Its perfect for "every day". I give this wine four out of 5 stars.
