For one thing, they have a great selection. They sell wines from all over the world, but pay special attention to those areas that produce the most and the best, like California. At Wine World, you can find not only popular brands like Mondavi and Coppola, but you can find more obscure bottles as well. And for whatever price you are ready to pay.
But it takes more than a great selection of merchandise to get and keep my attention. Atmosphere and how I am treated as a customer is very, very important. Proprietorships often give the best service, and Wine World is a proprietorship.
The owners, Dick and Sally Benjamin, are a couple of friendly folks who get to know their regular customers, and don't try to sell you what you don't want. Even if you're on a strict budget, or just in a cheap mood. In fact, one afternoon when I went in, Dick asked me what I was in the mood for. "Cheap," was my reply. He took me right to some bottles of Estrella they were trying to get rid of, marked $4 per bottle. It certainly didn't taste like a $4 bottle, and I wound up going back for more.
If you want to ask questions about wine, the Benjamins are more than happy to share their knowledge. In fact, you will get the distinct impression that you are dealing, not with businesspeople, but with hobbyists, they so obviously enjoy what they do. At the same time, they are consummate professionals.
They have regular wine tastings as well, which are very reasonably priced. For a small fee, you can come in and taste several wines over the course of an evening. If you decide to make a purchase, you entrance fee is deducted from the price you pay. These events are always fun, relaxed occasions, great for the experienced or the newbie wine lover.
Wine World is located at 133 Georgia Avenue, North Augusta, S.C., right over the 13th Street bridge from downtown Augusta, Ga. They may be reached at (803) 279-9522.
