Winn-Dixie Issues Allergy Alert on Chocolate Ice Cream

Winn-Dixie Stores, Inc. is recalling some packages of its Prestige Chocolate Ice Cream because of a printing error on the package. The lid is correct but the bowl it self says that the ice cream inside is only chocolate, when in fact is it Chocolate Almond ice cream.

The company itself is recalling the cartons of the chocolate ice cream because of this printing error. This printing error does cause concern because of the nut allergy some people have. No consumers have fallen ill with allergic reactions thus far, and the company wishes to keep it this way.

However, with the serious risk, the company decided to remove the mislabeled chocolate ice cream tubs from all Winn Dixie store shelves. The company encourages shoppers to return the product for a full refund if they feel uneasy about consuming the ice cream.

The chocolate ice cream in question is sold in the oval 1.75-quart containers, and has the company code of 12-356 and has an expiry date of 6/25/08 on it. The expiry date is on a white strip that is on the side of the containers.

The only thing wrong with the product contains chocolate almond instead of plain chocolate ice cream and those people with allergies to nuts face a risk. The ice cream is safe for most of the population, so consumers should not panic.

The recalled Prestige Chocolate Ice Cream only was sent to Winn Dixie and save Rite stores in Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Louisiana, and Mississippi. Shoppers in those states have the option of tossing out the ice cream or contacting the store for a full refund.

The company has not received any reports from customers in connection with this ice cream packaging errors and is willingly pulling the containers of ice cream in question. The FDA was informed and is currently working with Winn Dixie to recall these containers of chocolate ice cream.

The recall came about upon the discovery of the chocolate almond ice cream in the chocolate ice cream package. The company figured some of the chocolate-labeled tubs got into the chocolate almond line at some point. The tubs were filled with the wrong ice cream at this point. Those incorrectly labeled tubs were then shipped without any one in the production line noticing the error.

Shoppers who have any questions or have doubts are encouraged to contact the company at 1-866-WINN-DIXIE or return the product to their store for a refund or exchange.
