Its been many years since that first Winstead's opened and now there are a total of 10 Winstead's restaurants around the Kansas City Metropolitan area. For information about locations and phone numbers you can visit the Winstead's homepage to find out more. Winstead's first opened as a drive-in, but through the years it has evolved into a standard eat in restaurant. Winstead's has kept the appearance of a classic drive-in restaurant on both the inside and outside of the restaurant but drive-in service is no longer available. Winstead's was a popular hangout for teens in the 40's and 50's especially, but as time progressed it became a popular restaurant for any age.
In 1998 the Wall Street Journal announced that Winstead's was "The Midwest Burger King" Winstead's had not been very well known outside of Kansas City up until this point. The Wall Street Journal was also careful to correctly point out that a Winstead's steakburger is not complete without "the exclusive Winstead's drink you eat with a spoon." That drink is the "special chocolate malt" which was originally known simply as "the frosty." Winstead's claims to have taken the name before Wendy's but it has never really been investigated.
More recently, Winstead's was ranked "City's Best Burger" in Kansas City by AOL City Guide. AOL City Guide also awarded Winstead's "City's BEST Cheap Eats." Winstead's is "cheap food" but definitely not "cheat quality". A single steakburger is only $2.15, a double is $3.25, and the triple still only $3.95. The menu has a fairly good selection, and there will always be enough food to fill you up. More menu items can be found on the Winstead's website. Winstead's currently is open from 6:30 am to 10:30 am for breakfast and, "All Day 'til Late" for the full menu. Winstead's is a great local restaurant in Kansas City, and is well worth the trip for anyone near Kansas City. Winstead's provides an eating atmosphere that you will never forget.
