Winter Blooming Plants: A Guide

Do you ever get the winter blues and long for the beauty of spring? Do you miss your' beautiful flower garden? There are wonderful varieties of flowers that bloom in the winter months and with a little preparation you can chase your' winter blues away and enjoy beautiful blossoms during the coldest part of the year.

Massonia is just one such plant. This plant comes from South Africa but is sold online through many different plant websites. Massonia is perfect for those who need a burst of color in the winter. According to LariAnn Garner, A Master of Botany and Agriculture at Dave's Garden, most of the six varieties of Massonia lie dormant in the summer months and bloom during the winter months. These are a fragrant plant species that smell similar to honey and jasmine. All are colorful and will brighten your' decor and even better, your' mood.

You can easily brighten the mood outside of your' window simply by planting Winter Honeysuckle. According to suite101.com, Lonicera Fragrantissima, also known as Winter Honeysuckle, will vine where ever you choose to plant it and requires minimal care. It will bloom for you from Late December through March and produces white flowers that are very fragrant and attract many winter bird species. Once the plant has stopped flowering, it will produce tons of berries that the birds love to eat. So not only will you have beautiful, great smelling flowers in the winter, but you will also have beautiful birds to watch as they enjoy your' Winter Honeysuckle!

Vining Clematis is another great option for a winter garden, provided that you do not plant it in an area that is not protected from the wind. Vining Clematis come in several colors including freckled, apple blossom red, pink and white. With very little care, Vining Clematis will bloom from November through April.

Many winter gardeners love the beauty of the Weeping Jasmine, which flowers from November through April. With normal watering and pruning when needed, the Weeping Jasmine will color your' garden with bright yellow flowers. You will have to secure this plant to a trellis if you wish it to climb, or you can plant it as a hardy ground cover or over a low wall or fence for a burst of color.

Missing the deep greens of summer? English Ivy can bring them back for you! Known as English Ivy or Common Ivy, these plants do well in containers or planted directly into the ground. They come in an array of greens, gold and red hues. English Ivy is an aggressive climber so it is recommended that you plant it in an area that you want covered in the plant or keep it pruned beginning early in growth to keep it from taking over.

The Kaffir Lily is yet another beauty that will brighten your' kitchen table or any room in your' home during the cold winter months. With deep pink blossoms and deep green foliage this flower will bloom from September through December and brighten any room.

The Veltheimia Bracteata is a gorgeous plant from South Africa that blooms a flower that looks like a pale green rose with deep green, waxy foliage. This plant will give you blooms from February through early April.

Once you begin to look for plants to liven up your' gloomy winter scene, you will find that there are many, many resources on the Internet and through plant catalogs that provide an array of plants for winter gardeners for both indoor and out door gardens. So chase those winter blues away with some beautiful, fragrant plants!
