Of the small RV campers, the truck camper is the best suited for camping during cold weather. Some of the foldup RV campers do have heaters. But, these are rarely enough to keep you warm during the winter months. It is meant more for spring or fall weather when it is not close to freezing outside.
If there is a large amount of snow and the road conditions are not good, the truck camper may be the only way you will be able to get to the campsite. Truck campers also allow you to be able to pull trailers to haul your toys, such as a snowmobile or two.
Camping during the winter months can be a great adventure. But, there are some addition safety considerations you much be aware of. Winter is not the best time to camp alone. For the optimum safety there need to be at least three people in the group camping together. If there is any type of trouble or emergency, having a traveling companion or two could be the difference between get out alive or not. Another piece of good advice is to make sure your truck or pulling vehicle is in good condition. The best RV camper will do you no good if the vehicle you are using to pull or haul it breaks down and strands you in freezing temperatures.
Make sure you have the supplies you need to last the entire weekend. If you are using a propane heater, check to see that the tanks are full. Propane heaters will work great in keeping you warm. It is also nice to be able to cook on your stove and take a hot shower. So, taking enough propane is a good idea. But, they cannot run if there is no fuel. Be sure to check your water storage tanks, as well.
Make sure you take enough clothing to last the trip. Even in the cold weather, if you are performing physical tasks that get your heart going, you will sweat. Being outside in freezing weather with wet clothing can cause hypothermia. Dress in warm dry clothing that is layered. It is much better to have on two or three layers than one thick layer.
Camping during the cold winter months may be the type of RV camping you most enjoy. But, it is the same as any other time of the year. You need to be prepared and you need to take precautions. Hopefully, these tips will help you have a great adventure camping in your RV camper during the cold winter where ever you choose to travel.
