Winter and Cold Weather Fishing Tips for You

Dan Cook
As the year 2008 comes to a close, fishermen all over the country are getting ready for trout season. Trout season means that the weather is becoming colder and the fish are becoming more sluggish due to the cold water. When fish become sluggish it makes it more difficult to catch them. Because of this, we need to keep certain things in mind when we go trout fishing.

Since fish are cold blooded, as the water temperature drops the fishes metabolism slows down. Knowing that the fish will not be as willing to go after the bait like they would during the summer, we need to modify our fishing technique. This gives you a good opportunity to test out your fishing lures. When the water is cold, try using the smaller lures such as little worms or even flies. If you still want to use night crawlers, try cutting them into smaller pieces and try it.

The same is true for your lures. Instead of using big ones, try using ones like a minnow. Since the water is cold and the fish are sluggish, you need to adjust your reel in speed as well. Cold fish want to spend as little energy as possible to get their food. Using a slower reel in speed lets them have a chance to attack your bait and hook, allowing you a chance at landing that catch of the day.

Another thing that is important is the weather. If it is raining, you will not have as good of luck as you would if it was a sunny day. The phases of the moon also play a role in fish behavior. Planning ahead in regards to the weather will save you time and effort in fishing.
