Winter Craft: Felt Christmas Tree Ornament

Tammy Lee Morris
Making homemade crafts and ornaments for the Christmas tree is an annual tradition around my house. I try to come up with an original new craft ornament to make with my kids every year. A recent project was a felt Christmas tree ornament that was quick and easy to make and the kids had a great time decorating them after I did the initial sewing. This craft can be a no-sew craft if you use felt glue (available at craft stores) to join the pieces.

Felt Christmas Tree Ornament: What You'll Need

To make this simple felt ornament for your tree, you will need green felt, pinking shears, felt glue (if you choose to glue it together instead of sewing), ribbon, decorations (sequins, glitter glue, mini pom poms, etc.).

Felt Christmas Tree Ornament: How to Make It

To make this ornament, you will need to start by cutting two identical triangles from the green felt using pinking shears. The easiest way is to layer two pieces of felt together then cut out both pieces at the same time. The pieces can be any size but I chose to make Christmas trees that were approximately three inches in height. You can make them larger but I would not recommend making them smaller than three inches as it can make the felt awkward to work with in a smaller size.

Cut a six-inch length of ribbon for the hanger. Fold the ribbon in half and place the ends between the two felt pieces at the top of the triangle. Sew around the edges of the tree, making sure to sew the ribbon hanger into place, or use felt glue to glue the pieces together. If you use glue, allow time for it to dry before proceeding.

The next step is to decorate this Christmas tree ornament. This is the best part for the kids to do and they can let their imaginations run wild. I gave them glitter glue pens and other items I had on hand then turned them loose to decorate their own trees. Sequins can also be glued on if you have them on hand.

Create glittery garland and ornaments on your felt tree, glue on sequins and pom poms and whatever else you might have.

Allow the tree decorations to dry then you may choose to decorate the other side as well, or you can leave the back side undecorated.

These felt Christmas tree ornaments also make great gift tags on Christmas presents. Use glitter glue pens to write the recipient's name on the back side of the tree and allow it to dry.
