Winter Craft Idea: Outside Beach Bum Snowman & Family Project

Snowman Project Designed to Keep the Kids Busy Outside!

Lyn Vaccaro
I find that I'm always surprised by the steady flow of craft ideas that come from my favorite craft site Disneyfamilyfun.com. I'm not a big fan of winter, but this website really helps winter scrooges like myself to actually find something to smile about. That continues to be the case with this winter outdoor craft that will keep the kids outdoors and engaged. Try creating this Beach Bum Snowman with his family members, next time the snow accumulates in your neighborhood. This snowman family will be turning the heads of those driving by!

Supplies
Snow (enough for a snowman lying down)
Sticks for arms
A few charcoal pieces
Beach towel
Umbrella, or boogie board
Carrot stick
Bottle cap
Bottle of water
Sunglasses
Any additional props you'd like

Directions

First lay out the beach towel for your snowman to lay on. What beach bum snowman really wants to lay in the snow?

1. Gather enough snow for a snowman's body, head and legs and shape him on top of the beach towel. Don't forget his feet! When those have been shaped, adorn them with a pair of flip flop sandals, perfect for the beach.

2. Create his face with the carrot stick for the nose, and the charcoal for the mouth and eyes. Remember the sunglasses to protect his eyes. You could also cut some apple for red lips instead of the coal.

3. Use more charcoal for the buttons on his body.

4. Place sticks into each side for his arms.

5. Place his umbrella or boogie board next to him on the towel for more of a summer look, and there you have him, the best beach bum snowman ever!

6. Be sure his bottle of water is handy in case he's thirsty too.

Next, I thought of a twist of my own that you could include with this outside project to take it a bit further. It's all about the family.

What About the Rest of the Family?

Once you have the head of the snowman family completed, you can move on to the rest of the snowpeople that comprise his family. I thought this might be a cute way to add to the previously mentioned Disney winter project yard display and will have driver's by turning their heads as they pass.

Mom and the Kids

Lay out another beach towel next to Mr. Snowman, and commence on building his mate the Mrs. You can create her to appear in a sitting position by just building two balls, the body and the head. Give her more of a feminine hat to wear and construct her face with perhaps some red food color on each cheek so she appears to have a sun burn.

For the kids, sprawl out another beach towel and try creating 4 smaller snowballs that will serve to look like the children. One each for the body, and then one each for their heads. Give them each the sun burned cheeks as well. After all, dad has sun protection from the umbrella and mom and the kids are exposed to more sun. It's good to be dad right? Construct the face to show cheerful kids happy to be beach bound. You could use summer sun hats for their heads. Place a pale and shovel in front of each snowman child and your winter yard creation is complete!

Don't forget to take pictures of your snowman family. It's a lot of work to get the bunch of them assembled so you'll want some great memories to be able to look back at.
