Winter Craft: How to Make a Tube Sock Snowman

Back in high school whenever the holiday season rolled around I would make gifts for all of my friends. I would sometimes spend weeks making anything from gift baskets to hand painted cards all for the sake of spreading some holiday cheer. Though I made many different kinds of winter crafts throughout the years there was always one that stood out from the rest: a tube sock snowman.

Making a tube sock snowman is a lot of fun, fast, and very easy. Once you have made several snowmen you can use them as gifts or they can add a little extra touch of cheer to your home décor this winter season. Best of all, just about any age can participate in making this fun winter craft.

What you need:

1. A tube sock

2. Buttons

3. A permanent marker

4. Decorative holiday fabric

5. Rubber bands

6. Craft glue or hot glue gun.

7. Rice

8. Yarn or rubber bands

Instructions:

Before you begin making the snowman's body make sure that the sock you are using is indeed a tube sock. In other words, the sock should be straight with no bend and no heel in the foot area. If you prefer for your snowman to have a textured body then turn the sock inside out.

Hold the top of the sock open and fill about two thirds with rice. This will form the body of the snowman, give him weight so he can remain stationary, and allow for the snowman to sit nicely on a table or mantle.

Tie a piece of yarn or secure a rubber band to form the snowman's body and head. Remember to use a big round ball for the body and a nice small ball for the head. Make sure to dedicate slightly more than half of the rice for the body. Leave about one inch or more of the sock above the head and tie of off with rubber or string. Fold the excess sock over in order to form the hat.

Note: If you want to get really creative you can use colored baby socks for the hat. If you like your hats to be simple just fold it over and tie some string around it as decoration.

Once you have formed your snowman complete with a hat, decorate it and add some personality. I personally line up excess buttons along the middle of the snowman's body. Then I use holiday fabric to tie around the first division to give the snowman a scarf. Afterwards I draw on the face and use some string to decorate the snowman's hat. The possibilities are really endless when it comes to decorating, some people like to use pom poms at the end of a hat and others like to use glitter. It really all just depends on what you want your snowman to look like. Just remember to use either craft glue or a hot glue gun to hold the decorative bits in place.
