Winter Dangers: Prevent Fire Tragedy by 'Adopting' a Hydrant

Snow Surrounding a Fire Hydrant Means Precious Time is Lost Fighting a Fire

R.C. Johnson
Snow impacts our lives in travel, school, work, events, and our very safety in and around our homes. It can be an endangerment to our lives if it prevents firefighters from getting to a fire hydrant quickly should a fire occur in a home or a building in our neighborhoods.

So what can we as property owners and responsible citizens do to help prevent winter danger from fire occurring? The City of Maple Grove, Minn. has a good solution: Adopt-a-Hydrant.

This is what is displayed on the City of Maple Grove website:

Adopt-a-Hydrant

Do you know where the hydrant that serves your home is located? Residents are encouraged to adopt a hydrant near their home by agreeing to clear snow from the area surrounding the hydrant. To adopt a hydrant, please call 763-494-6370 or email as directed on the Maple Grove website.

This idea can work anywhere

If your community does not have an adopt-a-hydrant program in place, perhaps you could suggest the implementation of such a program to your community leaders.

Even without a community program such as the one that exists in Maple Grove, a resident can take on the responsibility of seeing that snow is kept cleared from the area surrounding a nearby fire hydrant.

The townhome complex where I live takes care of that winter danger by having their contracted snow removal crew shovel around the fire hydrant areas each time they clear snow throughout the complex. The crew also clears snow in front of the mailboxes.

Winter dangers exist even where we are not expecting them to be lurking. Help prevent fire tragedy during the winter months - adopt a hydrant and keep the snow cleared from around it. The life you save from such a winter danger may be your own.
