Winter Decorating Ideas for a Small Apartment or Townhouse

Lisa Riggs
While a small living space can be quite cozy during the winter months, it can also present some unique challenges when it comes to seasonal decorating. Too many contrasting colors, too many styles of decor or simply too many pieces can easily make a very small apartment, condo or townhouse look overwhelmed and overdone. Here are some tips on how you can make that small but sweet living space look just right for the winter season and it's holidays.

Keep your Decorating Colors at a Minimum. Choose only one or two seasonal colors that you can carry though the rooms of the home. Do not attempt to decorate each room with red, green, gold and silver. This will overwhelm the small space and create a look that is too garish and too bold. There will be a lack of unity within the decor that is so essential when giving a small home a seasonal flair.

Choose a Decorating Style that can be used in all the Rooms. Whether you prefer to decorate for winter in a country theme, or prefer the more modern style of decor, keep it unified among all the rooms of the home. The central living area of apartments and townhouses that are small in size often overlook several other rooms. Keeping to the same style of seasonal decor will pull the entire home together in a very attractive way.

Stick to a Small Christmas Tree. While we all love a six foot tall holiday tree gaily decorated with tons of ornaments, the size of a tree must be in proportion to the size of the home. A tiny living room that is overtaken by a gigantic Christmas tree simply looks too cramped and crowded. It takes away from the other decor and makes the space less functional than it needs to be during the holiday season.

Use a Dish of Pine Cones to add some Holiday Flair to a Small Corner. A pretty dish of pine cones is a lovely and traditional way to add some winter feeling to a very small space. Fill a plain white dish or bowl with scented pine cones purchased at a crafts store or ones that you picked up while on a winter nature walk, and place it on an end table or in the corner of a mantel or bookcase.

Cover the Largest Picture Picture Frame with Wrapping Paper and a Bow. If you have a large picture or painting that is the focal point of your living or dining room, consider giving it a holiday makeover. Cover the frame with a pretty foil or solid colored wrapping paper and finish it off with a bow. Keep the rest of the winter decorating in that room to a minimum, as this simple and pretty decoration will surely become the seasonal decor that everyone will focus on.

Choose a Signature Candle Scent for your Home. A wonderful seasonal aroma that is carried throughout the apartment or townhouse will give the impression that the home is quite ready for the holidays. This will balance out the simplicity of the winter decor. Choose your favorite scent and add a three wick, pillar or set of votive candles to each room so that your holiday guests will enjoy the pretty glow and delicious aroma as they move throughout your home.
