Here is a tip on what to keep in your car. A winter emergency kit should include several items. The first is warm blankets. You will need them if you can not get out of a situation. Warmth is very important if you can not get help because of a storm.
The second thing you will need to have is some type of food. It will help you if you are stuck long enough.
The third is a coffee can and a candle. Fourth is a book of matches or a lighter. Then you will need sand or kitty litter. The coffee can, the candle, and the kitty litter are all part of the same purpose.
To get your car unstuck you can try to return traction to you vehicle by using these items. First you light the candle with the matches and drip a little of the hot wax into the bottom of the coffee can. Then put the candle in the wax so it stands up. Now put the lit candle in the coffee can by one of the tires that drive the car. The heat from the candle should melt the snow and ice so you have more traction. Then remove the can and put the sand or kitty litter on, this will increase the traction. You may want to do the same with the other wheel. Once you have done this you can try to get yourself out of the ditch again.
If this does not work, huddle under the blankets inside you car, and wait for help. It is also good to remember that you might be able to get help from a nearby house. Also you can call for help if you have a cell phone. The emergency kit is just for what its name describes it to be for, an emergency. Do not assume that you will not need it if you have a cell phone. A signal can easily be lost in a storm. Also do not think that just because your car is a four wheel drive vehicle that you are safe. There is an old saying. It goes like this, "overconfidence is the greatest of enemies." It is true that your vehicle can get out of slippery situations better then a two wheel drive but do not get over confident.
