Winter Exercising Tips

Keeping Your Routine Even on the Coldest of Days

So you've decided to get in shape. You've picked up soccer and made it a point to play with your friends every weekend in the park. You go running every morning and bike on beautiful summer days. You're working out consistently and it's starting to show. But then the wind starts to get colder and the leaves fall off the tree and soon you are looking out the window at a landscape covered in snow so high you can hardly walk. For some this is the greatest time of the year, but for you it has left you with nothing active to do.

If you live in an area were the weather can change drastically throughout the year, it can be hard to keep up good exercising habits. It is vital to be able to adapt your workout plan for the winter season when going outside may no longer be an option. That is were this guide comes in. With these basic ideas you'll soon be ready to stay in shape no matter what winter throws at you.

Developing New Interests

Sometimes the easiest way to get around the change in season is to simply pick up some new interests. Take skiing for example. Skiing is a very exciting sport that can be picked up by anyone. Or if skiing isn't quite your thing you can try snowboarding or even hiking in the snow. You'll never know if you're going to like something until you get out there and try it. After all, the key to staying in shape is to do something that you want to do.

Adding Spice to Your Routine

For some, outdoor activities during the winter season may not be their thing. But no matter what you do to stay in shape you should always try to change up your routine and add new exercises. Otherwise you'll run the risk of getting bored and then you'll never stay in shape.

Start Your Day with 'Warm Exercises'

Sometimes the only thing that might be holding you back from getting out in the snow and doing your daily jog is the chills you feel when you wake up. When you've slept through a cold night the last thing you are going to want to do is go outside and get even colder. If this is the case then you'll want to adjust your pre-workout exercises to compensate. Instead of doing your usual stretches, try doing some dynamic exercises like jumping-jacks. Once you get your blood pumping and some warmth flowing through your body you'll be ready for the winter breeze.

Other Hints for Warming Up

If 'warm exercises' and dynamic workouts aren't enough to get you ready to tackle the winter then there are some other things you can do to get yourself out of bed. You can try taking a warm shower to get yourself going or try putting your workout clothes in the dryer the night before so they'll be warm when you get up in the morning. I also find that sometimes getting a little something warm in your belly, like a fresh cup of tea, can really give you that little extra something. And finally above all take your time. If you are having troubles getting warmed up don't just throw yourself outside and expect it to get any better. Take your time and wait until you're ready to go outside or else you'll be in for one horribly freezing morning.

Turn Necessity into a Workout

Sometimes even the most basic of chores around the outside of your house can turn into great physical exercises in the winter. If you want something active to do shovel the snow off your sidewalk and the path leading up to your front door. If you need even more to do then shovel the snow out of your driveway or off of your porch or balcony. Not only will this pay off over time because you'll be able to drive and move around the outside of your house easier but it'll give you something to do each time a new layer of snow falls. Walking in deep snow is also very physically demanding so sometimes if there is somewhere you need to go that's near by you can try walking there instead of driving.

Remember To Layer

If you do chose to do parts of your exercise outside it is vital to your success that you dress properly for the weather. To be able to workout in the freezing cold you'll need to be able to stay warm and yet at the same time be able to cool off before you overheat. If you haven't already figured out how to do this there are some basic guidelines you can follow. First, you'll want to dress in three layers. The inner most layer should be something thin like wool, the second layer should be something warm like fleece and the third layer should be a thick jacket that can protect you from the wind. Secondly, you should try to wear layers that can easily be zipped up and unzipped. That way if you start to overheat, you can simply unzip one of your layers allowing yourself to cool down.

Unwind After Workouts

And finally, once you finish working out for the day make sure to do something special to reward yourself for a good days work. Do something relaxing like taking a warm shower, sitting in the hot tube, or sitting by the fire. And make sure to give yourself a break from exercising at the end of the week as a reward for all of your hard work. If you need a bit more motivation you can even plan a final reward for if you can keep your workout routine for the entire winter like a dream vacation.

Now that you've read this article you should be able to look at the winter season a little bit differently. With these tips hopefully you'll find it a little bit easier to stay in shape even on the coldest of winter days.
