Winter Gear for Tots and Tweens

How Many Coats Does Your Child Need?

Ada Liel
In the morning, the weather man often mentions this topic and it got me thinking here's another thing for me to fail at as a mom. But maybe not. Like everything in parenting you can overthink it but just once. Think it throught and stick with the plan you come up with. In the winter each child needs a long coat and a short jacket. They also need three hats and three pairs of gloves because these get lost and also these are itmes they can pick for themselves and will not have to share with their brothers. Some outerwear can be hand me downs but things worn close to the skin are best purchase new for each child. You can wash everything religiously but it's so much nicer for them to have their own new clean things. You can buy t-shirts, thermal underwear and turtlenecks in bulk at local discount stores if cost is a consideration.

This is a good chance to practice autonomy and choice. To learn a little bit about your child's personality and theor creative ability. Just the way the put colors and patterns together or the shade and shpes they are drawn to over timem can tell you so much about your little ones and their foibles. Even twin and trips shouldn't dress alike even though its fun for grown ups to see. Maybe they want to be alike most of the time and maybe sometimes they want to be different it's their say. You can even given them each a $20 accessories budget when you walk into the store and see if they can keep track and minus off money yet. They'll need help with this to a certain age.

You'll want to stick with neutral bold colors for boys and pastels or neutral for girls. Make sure their names are clearly and discreetly marked in the labels because it's easy for kids to get their things mixed up with their classmates and after a party or sleep over it's not fun to make two trip to pock up things left behind or fair to leave the host parents think great now I have to call around and track down the kid who I think would fit this coat.

There are some great inovations is fabrics like hiking clothes from Eatern Mountain Sports of the perinneal favorite LL Bean. You can get silk underthings for athletic kids or those who play in the snow a lot. They have great socks available the whisk the sweat away from your skin. This is also great gear to wear under your business suits so you can be svelte and warm in the winter and still look as sharp as ever in your designer work wear. You know you still love going to work and playing with the grown ups too.
