Some manufactures will "take back" the equipment and credit the pro for next seasons order, but.... when this is not an option the pro is forced to sell it, or hope someone will purchase it next season. Knowing that they want to sell the equipment by the end of the season to help with their bottom line, they will usually discount the equipment at what they paid, or below at a golf show or expo.
Golf shows/expos have been around for years and usually take place in December, January and February. A promotion such as Blue Star Promotions will sponsor and host the event at a local arena or conference center in which smaller golf shops and pros can buy booth space to sell their left over equipment. Most will charge a small cover to get in, so you should want to buy something before you go in so you are not spending the $5 or $10 cover just to window shop.
Once you get to the show you will find just about every piece of equipment from the past season or two on sale. Do some quick shopping around early the first day then pull the trigger quickly on your purchase. These sales last 2-3 days but the best deals are usually gone early!! Once the major equipment is sold the first day or two, the last day is spent by shoppers picking the bones of the booths that were once filled to the brim with products. If you are looking for some cheap balls, shirts, shoes etc.. the last day is the best time to go as the vendor will drop their prices as low as they can in a last ditch effort to get rid of everything.
I will tell you, some of these expos can be very large and there is a lot to look which requires a lot of walking in some pretty congested areas, but have no fear there is more to do! Food of course is for sale and there will be areas to have a seat and take a break during the shopping, but there are some fun things to do as well. Indoor hitting nets used to demo clubs will also have a couple bays to measure your drive. Long Drive contests are at most shows and the winner will either take home a prize or gift certificate. There are also booths with discount golf vacation packages, novelty items along with the occasional golf clinic on a center stage by a local pro.
Blue Star Promotions, All American Exhibitions and South Central Golf Expos are just a few of the promotions who put on these local events. Check them out on the web for a show coming to a town near you!
