Winter "Grey" Whale Watching with the Natural History Museum in San Diego, California

Cheri Majors, M.S.
Did you know that ocean mammals are as curious about you as you are about them? Witness dolphins, whales, and other sea creatures move-in to get a closer look at you! In fact it is incredibly overwhelming to make eye contact with these magnificent creatures. Tickets go on sale December 1st for December 11th departures of the San Diego Natural History Museum Winter "Grey" Whale Watching, aboard Hornblower Cruise Lines with prices beginning at $34.00.

Grey Whale San Diego Museum and Hornblower Cruise Itineraries

The 3 ½ hour long San Diego Natural History Museum and Hornblower Whale and Dolphin-Watching Cruises run throughout the winter months, and on into April, accompanied by "Whalers", who are special museum-trained, oceanic tour guides. Promising breathtaking sights, and fun for all ages, 2 cruises are offered daily, mornings and afternoons.

Set sail mid-mornings from 9:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. or afternoons 1:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Your family can entertain, as well as celebrate the winter holidays together, or perhaps just enjoy a relaxing post-holiday New Year's harbor cruise, throughout the coastal waters of San Diego, and the neighboring Coronado Islands.

Follow the Grey Whales en Route to Warmer Breeding Waters

Follow the majestic Grey whales as they travel from the Bering Sea, and pass through San Diego's coastal waters. Bid "adios amigos" to these gentile giants, as they head farther down the peninsula to warmer breeding waters off the Baja California coast, traveling as far south as Sinaloa, Mexico (where the tip of Baja lines up with Mazatlan).

All cruise party-goers are guaranteed a complete aquatic showing of dolphins, birds, and sea lions to round-out their San Diego Whale Watching harbor cruise experience. All whale-watching cruises are accompanied by cheerful, extensively trained, volunteer aquatic greeters, better known as Museum Whalers/Interpreters, so you won't miss a thing.

Volunteering with the San Diego Natural History Museum

After the whale-watching harbor cruise experience, if you think you'd like to volunteer as a Whaler, or other natural-history Interpreter with the San Diego Natural History Museum, apply for a local resident position. Volunteers with an interest in the ocean, and aquatic sea life are encouraged to apply for the esteemed "Whaler" tour-guide, or other "Interpreter" positions.

Volunteers receive bonus museum science training, consisting of eight weeks of extensive marine biology museum courses, offered by the San Diego Natural History Museum, to chosen participants. If you don't quite have your "sea-legs" and would prefer a "land-lovers" position, or would like to volunteer for both land and sea, contact the Director of Volunteer/Intern Services at the San Diego Natural History Museum by phone at (619)255-0245, or email volunteers@sdnhm.org for the experience of a lifetime.

If my son ever gets stationed in San Diego again (which he hopes will happen again), I'll be sure to mention these places. We've been to many places in San Diego, but I've never seen whales the way you describe.

Cheri - I've taken the Horn Blower whale-watching tours a few different times, but was not aware of the volunteer opportunities. Thanks for the info - I might check this out.

excellent work ♥ Thanks for sharing. - My two sisters and I won a free whale watching trip when we were kids, and enjoyed the treat of San Diego's awesome grey whales. We also were among the few that did not get seasick, and had a blast! So thanks for the great article and refreshing a wonderful memory of childhood:) Happy Thankisgiving!

I would love to see something like that in person. That's a great deal for volunteers working there. Great job.
