Winter Hairstyles for Short Hair

Wendy Dawn
The good news is that your short hair is in style for winter 2009 / 2010. The most difficult decision you will have to make about your winter 2009 / 2010 short hairstyle is which of the cute cuts to choose.

You'll find this year's winter hairstyles easy to style and manage. That means you don't have to waste a lot of time fussing over your hair during a busy winter season of holidays, shopping, and parties.

Choose from winter hair styles including bangs, fringe cuts, tousles, and chunky hairstyles.

Tousle and Go

If you have become accustomed to tousled short hair, you are set for winter. If you already have curls, continue to use your favorite curl enhancing shampoo and conditioner, or try Herbal Essence Tousle Me Softly Shampoo (Amazon.com, $18.87 for multipack of 3) and Herbal Essence Tousle Me Softly Conditioner (Amazon.com, $39.95 for multipack of 3). Herbal Essence Tousle products are a relatively new line, but having tried them with my frequently tousled hair I particularly like the way they enhance curl. Used with Herbal Essence Tousle Me Softly Finishing Touch Cream to help form and hold curls as well as more expensive salon products (Amazon.com, $25.99 for multipack of 3).

If you don't have natural curls, see your professional stylist and ask for a body wave. A new generation of stylists may need an explanation for the term body wave. It simply means a perm with large rods that gives you light, large curls without kink.

Chunky hair cuts

A carryover from spring and summer hairstyles is the chunky hair cut. Chunky cuts allow for long layers, adding volume and texture to otherwise limp hair. Chunky cuts can be made all around your head, or if you like bangs or long bangs to comb over on the front, get chunky cuts in back for easy to style hair.

Chunky hair can be styled quickly using a straightening iron or curling iron. When I'm not tousled and want to straighten my hair I use Conair Infinity BC173 Tourmaline Ceramic Hair Straightener (Target.com, $39.99). The Conair Infinity will straighten dry hair and dry and straighten wet hair. I like to economize on time, so I love this hair straightener.

You can wear chunky hair straight, as long as you volumize your short hair with a shampoo like Victoria Secret So Sexy Shampoo and Conditioner for Fine Hair (Victoria Secret, $10 each or 3 for $24). Guarantee the volume of your hair stays pumped with Victoria Secret So Sexy Natural Hold Hairspray (Victoria Secret, $10 or 3 for $24). Lift your hair and spray toward the roots.

Fringe your face

Sport a short winter hairstyle by framing your face with bangs, which are back, or short chunky layers swept toward the face. Fringes need not be too neat, but you don't want the bed-head look either. Get a good cut, and then control your bangs and fringes with a soft hold styling gel like American Crew Light Hold Hair Styling Gel (Amazon.com, $8.95). American Crew styling gels are often considered a men's hair care product and are largely used by men. Once you use the soft styling gel, however, you'll hide it from your man because you will love the soft, conditioning hold.

Pixies and Bobs

Pixie and bob haircuts caught on like the flu following Victoria Beckham's transition from a bob to a pixie. If you cut your hair short for summer and are wondering how to style a pixie or bob for winter you have no worries.

First, get rid of the image of the perfectly coiffed pixie or bob. Add pizzazz to your short locks for winter by using a strong holding styling foam or gel. I like Paul Mitchell Freeze and Shine Super Spray to add shine and staying power to a top tousled pixie or bob (Drugstore.com, $17.10). I like the freedom of a spray. You can drench hard to hold hair or go easy on hair that is more textured and easily holds a style. If you prefer gel, try Paul Mitchell Firm Style Super Clean Styling Gel (Drugstore.com, $10).

Accent your pixie or bob with a surprising hairpiece. Think you can't use a wardrobe enhancing headband with short hair? Think again. It is a great way to accessories and draw attention to your hair during the winter.
