Winter Hiking in Utah

Theresa L.
Winter hiking can be a really exciting thing to do if you know where to go. Utah has some of the best places in the world to go winter hiking. One of those places is the Zion National Park.

Zion National Park is the idea location to go hiking in the winter because they have a rather mild winter. With a milder winter it allows hikers to many of the Zion's trails during those long winter months.

Before visiting the Zion National Park you should check with the visitor center because some of the trails may be icy due to lack of sunlight. You can contact the Zion's National Park visitor's center at 24 hours a day at 435-772-3256.

What makes this park so special is the brilliant white snow glistening off from the peaks. Not only does the snow make it beautiful but add the blue skies and you have entered an enchanted wonderland. Another advantage of visiting the Zion National Park during the winter time is the river. The Virgin River is higher in the winter time causing waterfalls and mist to form. Winter time is the only time you can experience both of these things.

Because the Zion National Park is so huge you will have the chance to explore at least nine different trails. This is a plus for those that do not wish to continue traveling. If Zion is not your choice you can check out the Lake Powell area, Labyrinth Canyon area, Snow Canyon. The Snow Canyon offers a hike through beautiful Navajo sands covered in black lava while the Labyrinth Canyon is easier to explore. Keep in mine because of Utah's mild winter, the lack of snow and warmer weather makes hiking in Utah a good place to go.

When going hiking, even at the Zion National Park, it is best to be prepared. Winter hiking boots is an essential thing to have on while hiking. Winter clothing is also a must have.

Another thing you will need when trekking through Utah trails in the winter time is a backpack. Your backpack should contain food, water, flashlights, first aid kit, and other items important for hiking. On a final note remember winter hiking is a lot more different than summer hiking and can be dangerous. Check the weather and consult with the visiting center prior to going out and never hike by yourself.
