Winter Inside

John Hewett
As the snow falls on your skin
I stain you with my blood
And the color of my sin.
The world is heartless
And so now am I.
The snow pours from my veins
And my blood from my pen.
As I wrote you a letter
To explain
The only way to survive the cold outside
Is to have winter inside.
Your tears freeze
As they fall to the ground
And melt as they meet my winter
Still warm and red on the ground.
The ice I hold in my hand
Covered in black
Lit by the glow of the moon
It drips, some of the winter gone
Transferred into my veins
The winter wraps my heart in cold
And as ice pours from the wound,
Winter creeps in
Numbs my heart
And swallows my soul.
You kneel beside me
And as my blood stains your skin
You feel the winter warm from within.
