Winter Olympics Craft Activity Idea #1 -- Olympic Torch
Don't worry! It's not a real torch! This Olympic torch is made of tissue and construction paper. For each Olympic torch, you will need:
1 piece of white, gray or brown construction paper.
Tape
Glue
3 sheets of colored tissue paper (yellow, red, and orange). Use more if desired.
Step 1: Roll the construction paper into a cone shape. Seal edges with tape.
Step 2: Dab in the inside of the cone's top opening with glue.
Step 3: Gather tissue paper and place in the following order: Red on the bottom, orange in the middle, and yellow on top. Fluff tissue paper so that it looks like a fire.
Step 4: Place tissue paper into the open top of the cone. Pat the sides down into the cone's glued areas.
When finished, this Olympic craft project makes a great centerpiece for a Winter Olympics relay race!
Winter Olympics Craft Activity Idea #2 -- Olympic Gold Medals
The 2010 Winter Olympics will give out gold, silver, and bronze medals. But these days, every child gets a gold medal -- just for participating. No child wants to bring home a (gasp!) silver medal or a bronze medal (heavens to Besty!), so have all the children make gold Olympic medals. This way, no child goes home in tears!
What you'll need:
Large piece of cardboard (a broken down box will work, too)
Circle cookie cutter, soup can or any circle-shaped item for tracing
Scissors
Gold paint
Hole punch
String
Simply trace circles using the cookie cutter or soup can into the cardboard and cut out. Lay the circles out over an old rag on the floor and have the children paint the medals gold. Let the "medals" dry.
After completely dry, use a hole punch to cut a hole into the top of each medal. Loop a piece of string through the medal and tie around the neck.
Winter Olympic Craft Activity Idea #3 -- Winter Olympic Ring Cookies
Here's a "craft" that won't leave any clutter around the house. (It'll clutter up everyone's bellies instead!) Creating the Olympic Rings out of sugar cookies is a great way to make your family a yummy dessert and get the kids interested in the Winter Olympics at the same time.
What you'll need:
Your favorite sugar cookie recipe (or refrigerated sugar cookie dough)
Circle-shaped cookie cutters (Ring-shaped would be ideal)
White frosting
Food coloring
Roll out sugar cookie dough and have the kids use the circle or ring-shaped cookie cutter. If a ring-shaped cookie cutter is not available, have children punch out a hole in the middle of each cookie prior to placing on a baking sheet. Bake cookies as normal. While the cookies are baking, divide the white frosting into five different bowls. For each bowl, use food coloring to create the following colors: red, black, blue, green, and yellow.
Once the cookies have finished baking and cooling, frost the cookies. Arrange the cookies on plates to represent the Olympic rings.
Winter Olympics craft projects are a great way to get kids interested in this worldwide sporting event. Who knows? Maybe one of your kids is a future gold medalist.
