Winter Skin Tips for the Houston, Texas Climate

Sally Ann Murphy
Taking care of your skin during a Houston winter can be trickier than it sounds. It can be 80 degrees one day and 40 the next, with the occasional drop into the 30s for a day or two during a really cold winter. As a result, you can never be sure what products to use on your face (except sunscreen, always use sunscreen!) One day you need a heavy moisturizer so your skin doesn't dry in the cold, the next day you need something oil free to survive the heat. And don't forget the rain, rain, rain winter sometimes brings Houston, Texas. For tips on how to care for your skin during the winter in Houston, Texas, see below.

Find a light-weight moisturizer for your skin type. This is something you should be able to wear year-round, tailored to your dry, normal, oily or sensitive skin, and should also have an SPF of at least 15. Then find something slightly heavier to prevent chapping on the cold Houston, Texas winter days. You can also choose to use a heavier cream at night, when your skin can repair itself from any dryness the winter cold may have inflicted. This will keep you from having to slather on a heavy moisturizer on a freezing morning, only to have it melt off your face when the Houston, Texas temperatures rise dramatically during the day.

Have a facial. If you don't regularly treat yourself to a facial, consider getting one in January or March. This way you can have your skin evaluated and receive any special treatments it might need - dermabrasion, treatment for acne, or maybe just a super moisturizing facial. Your Houston, Texas salon can also recommend some specialized products to keep your skin glowing through the rest of the winter.

Invest in lip balm. Buy two or three and keep them tucked in your purse, in your desk drawer, and one in your night stand. Both the cold weather and the drying effects of the heat in your home and office can really chap your lips. Keep them in good condition during the Houston, Texas winter with a good balm. Buy one with sunscreen to protect your lips from the sun, too, as the skin on your lips is very delicate.

Keep the rest of your body moisturized, too. You never know when that 80 degree day is going to pop up in Houston, Texas and you are going to want to wear your shorts. Scaly, dry legs are not what you want to display, so be sure to apply a light daily moisturizer. Also use a body polisher (salt or sugar scrubs are good) to keep your skin healthy and glowing. A dry body brush can also be helpful if you are experiencing a lot of dry, flaky skin on your body during the Houston, Texas winter.

Keep up your pedicures. Your feet cannot go into hibernation the way they could in a colder climate. Many women continue to wear sandals and open toed shoes year round in Houston, Texas. And even if you don't, you want to be prepared to slip on sandals or flip flops whenever the temperature rises. Pedicures will also keep your feet and legs smooth and polished. So don't forget about your toes during winter!
