Winter Solstice Poem 2009

The Longest Night

greenelf
darkness arrives
and stays
on this longest night
and shortest day.

deep cold winter settles
upon and within us all
on this longest night
every year.

bright bonfires burn
recalling summer sun
on this longest night
at winter start.

summer opposes
winter solstice
bringing bright balance
to this longest night
every year.

never fear
light returns
as we travel
'round the sun
seasons turn
and return.

winter solstice
begins our wait
for spring
for green
for light again.

I light a candle
look at stars
sit on a stone
warm in my blanket
I begin winter solstice watch.
