Winter Storm Crosses North Carolina

Jeffrey Weeks
Schools were closed and roads were treacherous across North Carolina Thursday as a massive winter storm moved across the state to the east.

"We are not finished with this event by any means," Raleigh WRAL meteorologist Elizabeth Gardner said. "We've still got a good bit of precipitation waiting in the wings, and it is going to be in the form of mainly sleet and freezing rain."

There was heavy snow in the mountains followed by a coating of snow in the Charlotte and Piedmont areas of the state, most of which switched over quickly to a wintery mix and then rain.

Showers are possible through the afternoon in eastern NC, when temperatures are expected to rise into the mid-30s. The rain will taper off by the evening but authorities are still wary of black ice in the evening and morning commutes.

No rain is forecast for Friday which will have a high in the mid-40s.

The temperatures on Saturday will fall back into the 30s with an uncertain chance of another Carolina winter storm.

We had the bad weather 2 weeks ago with 8 inches of snow dumped on us overnight ~ now it's gone and seems practically balmy outside. Good reporting as usual, Jeffrey =)

Stay warm & dry - we had our snow & ice during Thanksgiving week & hoping it stays more moderate for the Christmas & New Years Celebrations.
