Children would play outside in twenty degree weather for an hour just to go sled riding. They would also make snow balls with their bare hands if they didn't have a pair of gloves. Kids would run around in the snow not caring if it was filling their sneakers or not. They would let their little ears freeze if they didn't have a hat.
Thank goodness children have parents. Playing outside may be fun but when the temperature drops too low it can also be dangerous. Children don't think about things like frost bite or hypothermia. Kids only think about having fun. When a child runs around they feel warm inside. However, the air is still cold. As parents we have the responsibility to make sure that our children are safe outside during the Winter months.
The first way that we can do that is to set rules. Have a thermometer that shows the outside temperature on it in the house. Having one of these allows you to see the exact temperature it is outside. When your children ask to play outside in the snow look at the temperature. If it is below thirty two say no. If it is above thirty two say yes. When temperatures drop down into the twenties and teens or below playing outside even for a short amount of time can be dangerous. When it gets too cold don't allow them to play outside.
Even at thirty two or above the air is still very cold. If children are dressed properly for the weather though it is safe to play for quite a while. Proper Winter clothing consists of a variety of items. First there are the boots. Good winter boots are need for children to keep their feet warm and dry. Most children Winter boots are waterproof. Don't let your child wear a pair that's not. If a child's feet get wet they can get frostbite quickly. Next there's the Winter coat. A good thick Winter coat is needed to keep kids warm. So are snow pants. Snow suits are a mixture of a Winter coat and snow pants. They are easy to use. Your child simply steps into them and they zip up. Hats and gloves are the last must have Winter clothing items. Hats should be thick and cover the ears well. This can prevent not only frost bite, but also ear infections or aches. Winter gloves should be thick. The best available contain thins late. Try to make sure the gloves you choose for your child are waterproof. Hands get cold very quickly when wet.
If your child is dressed properly when they play outside their chances for getting hypothermia or frostbite are greatly reduced. Setting a playtime limit can also prevent both. Don't allow your children to play for more than one hour without having them come inside to warm up. Even when it's not too cold to go out, and when they are dressed warmly, being outside too long can still be dangerous.
These are the things to do to keep your kids safe and warm outside this winter. Good Winter wear is most important. So is checking the temperature and setting time limits for how long they are outside. Thanks for reading and take care!
