Winter Weather Woes 2: More Stories from the Pennsylvania

Ryan Marvel
Pottstown, Penn. -- And we're back. It seems like only a couple weeks ago I was writing about a different winter storm that slammed the east coast...oh, it was!

That sly mother nature and old man winter were at it again this week, covering my area and most of eastern Pennsylvania in a good 3-4 inches of snow and ice. If you think that sounds dangerous, it was. If you think it sounds cold...it was.

Thankfully, other than the four or five times I nearly split open my head walking to classes, I got in no accidents. I heard about plenty though, and saw my fair share as well. The roads were pretty bad, particularly this past Friday night when the snow was turning to freezing rain.

I left campus on Thursday night, taking a gamble that classes would be cancelled the next morning. They wereJ. I called the school at five in the morning on Friday just to be sure, and I don't take waking up at five lightly. The place where I work also closed early, so I spent the majority of the day doing homework, practicing the guitar, and catching up on episodes of Dexter.

Conditions were expected to become drastically worse starting at around six on Friday night, but it never happened. The storm fizzled off and by Saturday it was nothing more than some rain showers. Strangely enough, I was actually glad to be getting back to work on Saturday morning (but I was even more glad when I was done).

Now, though, road conditions are back to normal. A little wet still due to the melting snow, but nothing dangerous. Actually, the closest I came to an accident was this morning, when I hit a dip in the road that had filled and frozen over. I lost control for a few seconds, and was about two feet from the not so friendly telephone pole to my right when I managed to spin the car so I wouldn't be smashed.

I can remember one winter, I believe it was 1994 or 1996, we had a particularly heavy snow storm. The house where I lived with my family had a deck on the back, and the snow was piled so high on it that it was over the railing. My dad and I rolled the snow blower through the kitchen and out the back door to get it on the deck because shoveling was just not in the cards. We blew a pile of snow that was taller than I was, and my brother decided it was a good plan to jump off of the roof and into the pile. Don't worry, it was only a few feet.

I am now looking at the forecast for the next week and it seems that it is all clear for the next week or so. It's funny- when I was a kid all I wanted was a snow day, or a snow week. Now I just want spring to come so I can finally lay my ice scraper to rest!
